Persons with various loco-motor disabilities constitute a significant proportion of the population. Spinal Injury is one of the most common causes of loco-motor disability. The Ability People (TAP) is a non-profit organization registered under the Societies Registration Act and People with Disabilities (PWD) Act. An initiative is started to bring in positive changes in the life of people with disabilities mainly affected with Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) which requires a comprehensive management with a holistic approach. TAP also provides all possible rehabilitation support to PwDs affected with other disabling conditions. Realising the tremendous scope for developing a comprehensive centre that could cater to the basic rehabilitation needs of the people with disabilities in the coastal districts, we’ve initiated this organisation to empower PwDs to join the mainstream. The Ability People (TAP) initiated Ability Rehabilitation Centre (ARC) for Persons with Spinal Cord Injuries (PwSCI) and Other Orthopaedic Disabilities in collaboration with GVMC, Visakhapatnam to provide affordable/free services to the poor and needy. This center is first of its kind with operational objective of the ARC to provide comprehensive rehabilitation services including Physio & Occupational Therapy, Assistive Device Unit, Assistive Technology unit with wheelchair service provision, Mobility/Wheelchair Skill Training, Active Rehabilitation, Skill Development Unit, Peer Counselling, Social Work/Community based Rehabilitation and ten In-Patient Unit. ARC provides services for active rehabilitation for persons with spinal cord injuries (prime focus) along with other forms of disabling conditions like amputees, post-polio residual paralysis (PPRP), muscular dystrophy, children with cerebral palsy, spina bifida, adults with strokes and other neurological disorders and others. The focus is persons with disabilities who are economically challenged and do not have proper access to such facilities. The active rehabilitation services are for those persons affected with spinal cord injuries who have completed their medical management. Study finds 73% persons with disabilities facing severe difficulties post COVID crisis in India. According to the report by the NCPEDP, financial constraints and restricted access to essential items and healthcare services are key problems faced by them. India has a very large population of persons with disabilities. Persons with various loco-motor disabilities constitute a significant proportion of the population. Spinal Injury is one of the most common causes of loco-motor disability. I should know. As a person with spinal cord injuries (SCI), I am painfully aware of the life-altering impact of SCI. Fourteen years ago, I, Dilip Patro, a software specialist, founded The Ability People in the year 2007, after a near-fatal road crash in the year 1997 rendered me paralysed, waist down. THE ABILITY PEOPLE (TAP), is a non-profit, Non-Government and Disable People’s Organisation in Visakhapatnam (called City of Destiny) and FOURTEEN years old. Promoting 3Rs i.e., Road safety, Right to emergency care & Rehabilitation of crash victims. What we do: Help (CwSN), People with Disabilites(PwDs) & People with Spinal Cord Injuries(PwSCI) in India focus on their survival, mobility, empowerment & inclusion. Why we do it: To enable PwDs to participate in society as equals. PwSCI is one of the largest groups of un-served and marginalized people. Our First Programme initiative: Ability Rehabilitation Center (ARC), a post-hospital rehabilitation center, provides services for active rehabilitation for persons with spinal cord injuries (prime focus) along with other forms of disabling conditions like amputees, post-polio residual paralysis (PPRP), muscular dystrophy, children with cerebral palsy, spina bifida, adults with strokes and other neurological disorders and others. Realising the tremendous scope for developing a comprehensive center that could cater to the basic rehabilitation needs of the PwD’s in the coastal districts, of Andhra Pradesh, For more information visit us www.theabilitypeople.com TAP has developed a revolutionary concept for providing various services in Visakhapatnam, recognised and supported by various organisations from all over the world. Social Work & Community based Rehabilitation. 11. Connecting Skill Development & livelihood. 12. Mobile Workshop & Accessible Mobile services 13. Ten In-patient Bed Facility. The Ability People mandates to provide free, affordable or heavily subsidized treatment and active rehabilitation for the needy for both community and institutional-based purposes for persons with Disabilities, Children with Special Needs & Disabilities and other disabling conditions. The focus is persons with disabilities who are economically challenged and do not have proper access to such facilities. The active rehabilitation services are for those persons affected with spinal cord injuries who have completed their medical management. During lockdown, The Ability People continues to work towards reduction of Spine Injuries and provides rehabilitation to those unfortunate who suffer traumatic injuries. We are able to perform various activities undertaken by the ability of people in this difficult period. We couldn't have achieved all this without your overwhelming support and the guidance
