About This Cause
Blood banking and transfusion services From a collection of around 5000 units of blood in 1984, Rotary Bangalore-TTK blood bank, BMST, has grown tenfold in size and has acquired a reputation for high quality and safe blood products. It is also one of the largest regional blood transfusion centres and blood component facilities in Karnataka. Additionally, BMST is among a small group of voluntary organizations that provides a comprehensive Thalassemia management, control and prevention programme in India. The Rotary Bangalore-TTK Blood Bank has a voluntary donor base of over 5 lakh donors and reaches services to more than 90,000 patients every year. In the current scenario, demand far exceeds supply of safe blood and blood products and Rotary Bangalore-TTK Blood Bank has prioritized three non-negotiable aspects that can help people access safe blood when they need it most. These are quality, quantity, and accessibility, and these values have emerged as the guiding principles for all the programmes and services it offers. BMST offers the following services:Quality – in order to ensure quality, BMST collects blood through voluntary blood donation camps at carefully identified organisations, colleges and other entities. The Rotary Bangalore-TTK Blood Bank has a 100% voluntary donor system, as research has indicated that the replacement donor system has a higher risk of blood infected HIV or Hepatitis . Every unit of blood is screened for five infections – HIV, Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, Malaria and Syphilis. Additionally, every unit of blood undergoes the more sensitive and NAT testing using the latest, Nucleic Acid Amplification Technology, at the Government facility at Bowring hospital Quantity – from collecting 5000 units of blood in 1984, the blood bank currently collects close to 40,000 units of blood. To meet increased demand for blood during Dengue and other epidemics, the blood bank also increases the number of blood donation camps to ensure that this vital resource is available.Accessibility – the blood bank offers 24/7 services, besides offering doorstep delivery to far off hospitals. Bulk transfer of blood components is also enabled to other blood banks and to blood storage centres in 23 hospitals and the bank supports over 500 hospitals that do not have storage or blood bank facilities. Blood Components Applications Red blood cells Anaemia & blood loss Random Donor Platelets & Single donor (Aphaeresis) platelets, concentrates Cancer, Dengue,Coronary artery by-pass surgeryFresh Frozen Plasma and Cryoprecipitate Hemophilia, Liver disorders,DIC (disseminated intravascular coagulation)Peripheral blood stem cells ( PBSC)Bone marrow transplantation One unit – several patients Every unit of blood collected is separated into components for optimum and rational use, thereby ensuring that each unit serves the blood needs of several patients. The table indicates how each unit of blood is used. Blood components are issued free but expenses towards the collection, testing, processing and storage are recovered as per Government guidelines. Even these are waived for poor patients, Government Hospitals and Thalassemia patients Confidential counseling and referral services are provided to donors who test reactive for HIV and other infections. Outreach services In its efforts to ensure that safe blood is accessible outside of Bangalore as well, between 2009and 2011, BMST had offered blood delivery services in bulk to government district hospitals in six North Karnataka districts - Bagalkot, Bidar, Bijapur, Gulbarga, Koppal and Raichur, through its pilot RakthaVahiniprogramme.Blood components were transported to these far-off places in refrigerated containers. To ensure assured availability of rare blood groups, a Special donor club was formed in 2010.This is essentially a data-base of donors of Rh Negative as well as minor blood group. They are contacted to donate blood for patients who have difficulty in finding compatible blood especially those who have had multiple transfusions such as Thalassemia and Cancer. Reference Laboratory: BMST blood bank is a recognized reference laboratory in Immunohematology. Hospitals across South India refer difficult and problem cases to BMST where the correct blood group and the antibodies are identified and compatible blood is given Transplant Immunology - HLA Laboratory Human Leukocyte Antigen (HLA) is a protein found in white blood cells. They play a vital role in defending the body against viral or bacterial infections and determine the body’s response to drugs, vaccinations, autoimmune disorders and cancers. HLA types also form the basis for acceptance/ rejection of a transplanted organ/ bone marrow. BMST’s NABH Accredited, HLA laboratory is one of the foremost testing facilities in India whichcarries out pre and post- transplant tests for both Bone Marrow Transplant as well as solid organ (kidney, heart, liver etc.) transplants. With our expertise and more than 20 years’ experience in the field of Transplant Immunology, we offer clinical correlation & advice for transplant cases. Molecular Biology Laboratory The Molecular Biology Lab also carried out screening for Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI) by Nucleic Acid Testing (NAT) methods for the India-Canada Collaborative HIV/AIDS Project (ICHAP) of University of Manitoba, Canada & Karnataka State AIDS Prevention Society (KSAPS), now renamed Karnataka Health Promotion Trust (KHPT) with Gates Foundation funding, and for Family Health International (FHI).Tissue Bank A tissue bank, the first of its kind in Karnataka, was set up in 2010. The bone pieces which are otherwise discarded after knee and hip replacement surgeries are collected from different hospitals after informed consent from patients. After screening for infectious diseases like Hepatitis, HIV and Syphilis the tissues are cleaned, sterilized, freeze dried and Gamma irradiated. They are then issued to hospitals for use. The bone pieces and bone powder are used as surgical implants and also in dental practice as filling. Thalassemia services BMST runs a day-care transfusion centre to help patients avoid the cost and effort of admission into a hospital setting every time they need a transfusion. Blood transfusions are given free at the centre for patients with Thalassemia, Hemophilia and other hematological disorders that need regular, repeat transfusions.Recognizing that the incidence (new cases) of Thalassemia can be reduced, like it was done in Cyprus which had one of the highest incidences of Thalassemia in the world, BMST initiated the Thalassemia Prevention and Control Programme in 2008. It was initially funded by National Rural Health Mission (NRHM). Designed to provide educationon Thalassemia and its prevention, the programme offers the family members of patients a screening blood test for carrier status. Carriers of Thalassemia are then given preventive genetic counseling including pre-marital testing of spouse-to-be and pre-natal diagnosis. In 2014-15, Stem Cell Registry – India The Stem Cell Registry India (SCRI) was initiated by BMST in 2008and re-launched with the cooperation of the international NGO, DKMS Germany (the single largest network of stem cell donor centres in the world), in 2014. The aim of the SCRI project is to improve the chances of recovery and the health outcomes of patients suffering from Leukemia, Thalassemia and other blood disorders for whom a stem cell (bone marrow) transplant offers a second chance at life. To do this the SCRI educates, recruits and registers voluntary potential blood stem cell donors. The project aims to recruit over 10,00,000 potential stem cell donors by 2020. Education and training BMST strives to facilitate comprehensive services for blood banking. This includes knowledge transfer through trainings, education and technical assistance for Quality Control (QC) and Quality Assurance (QA) in blood banking, control of hospital infections and biohazard waste disposal etc. BMST is a recognized training centre for WHO, UNESCO, NACO, Drugs Control Department, Government of India, Department of Health and Family Welfare, Government of Karnataka, Community services Under its community services arm, BMST enables awareness, referrals and preventive services for gender and gender based violence issues, substance abuse, sexual and reproductive health, infections transmitted through transfusion such as Hepatitis B and C, STIsand HIV/AIDS. The community outreach services aim to improve health outcomes among communities by raising awareness and building individual and collective responsibilities among them. The target communities include school and college students, and young adults in various industries, particularly in the garment sector. Specially designed interactive teaching materials and methods are used in schools and colleges, while street theatre and folk art are extensively used to spread awareness among young adults. Sensitive areas such as child sexual abuse, gender-based violence, sexual and reproductive health etc are addressed through these interactive means. The workplace program- Namagaagi Naave is an initiative of the community services of BMST.
