About This Cause
Kaliyuva Mane - Model of Education: Divya Deepa Charitable Trust is running a free residential alternative school, ‘Kaliyuva Mane’ [Kaliyuva = learning, Mane = home] in Kenchalagudu village on the outskirts of Mysore city. Kaliyuva Mane is providing accommodation, food, clothing, health-care, and recreational facilities free of cost in an atmosphere charged with Love, Care and Empathy. 100 opportunity-deprived girls and boys are the beneficiaries of Kaliyuva Mane. These children are not suitable for formal schools due to various reasons. So, they are being educated in an alternative way. The beneficiaries of this school are: • School dropouts • Child labourers • Dyslexic children with normal IQ • Children from turbulent and broken families • Mentally normal children who are unable to adjust to the rigours of mainstream schools The school works on the philosophy: ‘School for children” instead of “children for school”. All children are evolving happily. The school was started in 2005 literally in a hut, with 14 children, 4 as resident children and 10 as day scholars. The school is eco-conscious; rainwater harvesting, Bore-well recharge, Solar lights, Astra stove for cooking, Solar hot water for bathing, Eco-toilet model, A small organic farm, and Gobar gas stove for cooking are all part of this school. Children are subconsciously becoming eco-sensitive. Normally, these children accompany an academic lag and therefore cannot adjust to formal schools. Hence, it is a child-centric alternative school. Some features of this school: Admissions round the year, as a dropped-out child can regain interest at any point in the year. Abolition of grades: Flexible teams based on knowledge, emotional acceptability and age. Congenial environment with utmost importance to emotions. A happy mind learns faster. Individualistic curriculum, taking into consideration the academic lag and the ability to learn. Evaluation: Regular informal tests rather than memory-testing long-duration annual exams. Medium of Instruction: Core subjects like Maths, Science and Social Science are used initially as a means to teach the English component of the subject and then the subject component. Campus as a learning tool: Usage of physical premises of the school to teach Maths and Science practically. 10th Standard: Child attempts the 10th standard public examination in English medium after he/she gains all the required basics and displays the ability to understand the syllabus. Life-skill training: By the time the child passes out from the school, the child will be exposed to skills like – Dairy, Cooking, Horticulture, Basic plumbing, Hair cutting, tailoring, plumbing and electric work, Crafts, Banking & Legal System, etc., Innovations in the School: Kids Bank: This mock bank is a unique experiment in Kaliyuva Mane to help children in money management. This bank works like any other typical bank, but has a material section apart from the cash section. The bank contains all the materials needed by children, such as toiletries, sweetmeats and stationery. The banking process starts with a monthly cheque given to each child. Children are provided with a personalized chequebook, passbook and account book. Children are required to write a personal cheque and submit it to the bank for any purchase. An aspect of awarding and punishing a child for his/her act is also integrated into this bank model. A Gift Cheque is given to the child when a child displays positive values such as helping others, accepting mistakes, etc and a Fine Cheque to deduct money whenever the child displays bad behaviour. Kids Court: Kids court is conducted to teach moral lessons to the children through actual acts rather than just books. When children quarrel, their disputes are settled in this court. Children drop their petitions in a complaint box, and on a fixed day, the teachers call both the parties to settle the disputes. Punishments to the guilty are generally very mild. For example, the guilty will not be allowed to play for a day, while all the children are playing on the ground. Or a Fine Cheque will be imposed on the child to deduct money from his account for being guilty. Eco-friendly School: The entire school campus of 2.5 Acres is a practical laboratory for environmental studies. The functioning and the importance of the following eco-friendly projects are being taught to the senior kids: Dairy, Gobar Gas plant, Organic Gardening, Rain-water harvesting, Bore well recharging, Wastewater recycling & Eco-sanitation, Solar LED campus lighting, Smart Classes & Projector, Astra stove (Wood-fired smoke less bio mass stove), Recycled handmade greeting cards, Use of eco-chip boards for doors and windows Cost incurred per child in Kaliyuva Mane In Kaliyuva Mane, all the children are provided with nutritious food (breakfast, lunch, snacks, dinner, and beverages), a residential facility, healthcare, hygiene, clothing, recreation, etc, along with child-centric education. About 30 members, who include employees, life-term volunteers, and full and part-time volunteers, currently work for the school. Kaliyuva Mane is located on the outskirts of Mysore city, in a village named Kenchalagudu. We depend on Mysore city for most of our daily needs. Due to erratic power supply, we need to depend on solar power or diesel generator. Factors like these keep the maintenance costs very high. For running the organization, we solely depend on individuals, corporate companies and philanthropic organizations. Average cost of providing food, clothing, accommodation, healthcare, recreation and education per child is $825. Total cost for 100 children is about $82500.
