Mission Statement
Industree builds sustainable livelihoods in the creative manufacturing sector to ensure that underemployed women can have high and regular incomes, decent and equitable working conditions, and resilience to life crises, whilst mitigating carbon.
About This Cause
Industree Foundation is a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) that has been working with indigenous women producers in India (also in Ethiopia) for over two decades. Industree works with communities to equip women with the necessary tools and skills to set up collectively-owned enterprises close to their homes and still become a part of mainstream value chains. This has resulted in reduced migration to slums in cities, much greater economic security and has led to significant social gains such as better nutrition, education, health care and improved resilience. Having already impacted 1,75,000 producers directly and indirectly, Industree Foundation has served on several think tanks, policy deliberations and continues to research on using its findings to strengthen women’s decision-making power and position in the economy. In Ethiopia, it is being seen as an important ally for progressive policy writing for the concerned ministries and government bodies. Our Mission: Industree’s mission, Mission Creative Million, is currently in its third year and is designed to impact millions of artisans and farmers (majority of whom will be women) across agriculture and non-agricultural value chains over the next 10 years through strategic interventions in the creative manufacturing sector. The purpose is to give potential creative producers, predominantly women, access to formal work in companies or social enterprises that they collectively own, providing a stable and dignified alternative to the precarious informal sector. Industree works on the assumption that economic empowerment is a springboard for social empowerment, and therefore provides handholding support to enable these women producers to set up and scale their enterprises. The aim is to achieve economic impact (including regular work, increased wages and financial stability), social impact (improved agency and voice for women at home and in their communities, as well as better educational opportunities for the next generation) and environmental impact with increased use of natural fibre as raw material with reduced migration and circular economies as focus areas. Industree currently works with live projects across four Indian states - Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Odisha and Andhra Pradesh, where it provides support to producers on various fronts - skilling, capacity building, market linkages, design inputs, access to capital and more. Industree is currently supported by both funders and investors that include USAID, HSBC, Target Foundation, UNDP, British Asian Trust, Mastercard Center for Inclusive Growth and International Trade Center, Geneva. It has also been able to leverage considerable support from various government departments in India. In Ethiopia, the focus is on a Farm to Fashion social business with cotton farmers, spinners, ginners, weavers, apparel producers and embroiderers as shareholders of the social enterprise.
