Mission Statement

ANIMEDH CHARITABLE TRUST (ACT) is a non-profit organization based in Mumbai, India. Animedh Charitable Trust (ACT) acts to make a difference to the lives of vulnerable children, youth and women in underserved communities by: a) Fostering individual capacity through building self-awareness, personal development, education and livelihood skills; b) Facilitating knowledge, resources and crucial linkages to enable the individual’s empowerment and progress; c) Contributing to a resilient, sustainable and just society for all. There is a huge void in both these beneficiary groups in a big country like ours with a 1.2+ Billion population, almost 30% of which is poor (Population below poverty line in India live on 1.25$ a day - Census report 2011). Post Covid-19, this statistic has become even worse. The underserved communities continue to be neglected because of emergent needs of the urban and accessible geographies due to Covid related impact (health, education and socio economic areas). We pledge to ‘ACT to make a difference’ and transform the lives of those less privileged around us by: • empowering underserved children, youth and women in order to transform their lives. ACT works on projects to impart early childhood intervention to promote child development and support disabilities; project on education and livelihood skills, provide vocational training, and facilitate earning opportunities and women entrepreneurship. promoting basic and higher education for underprivileged children, especially the girl-child. Additionally, ACT works closely on the vulnerable tribal communities focusing on the mental health and emotional well being of the children, youth and women; ACT also champions the access to water, sanitation and hygiene, a key enabler for empowering women, girls and rural families. ACT’s future vision is to deepen our impact in our welfare, development, and empowerment programs by taking a holistic approach to working with women and children. We aim to target and address barriers to their growth such as social pressures and emotional issues, in order that they can sustain their motivation and self-confidence to continue to earn and to learn independently.

About This Cause

Our beneficiaries are from low income urban, rural and tribal background, facing enormous social and economic challenges and need a helping hand and ray of hope to emerge victorious in-spite of all the odds. ACT is a universe full of Hope, Joy and Love that brings happiness and esteem to those it shelters. We believe in transforming the lives of our beneficiaries by bringing alive their hopes and dreams. To live up to our pledge, we established fourteen ACT community centres across low income communities in Mumbai and Navi Mumbai: • For women, we offer free vocational courses in Tailoring, Beautician Skills, Computer Literacy and English Speaking, combined with life skills workshops such as financial management and assertiveness, to give them the self-confidence to apply their skills to earn. We provide career launch kits for creating a livelihood from home and connect them to local businesses for employment. • For children, we offer after-school coaching in Computers, English, Maths & Science. In cases of special talent, we sponsor underprivileged girl students’ school fees and higher education. • To date, ACT has trained over 1650 women and connected them to livelihoods. We have enhanced the education of over 2,600 children. ACT has also launched a rural outreach intervention in Dadra Nagar Haveli, in partnership with local NGO Premankur: • In January 2018, we began a pilot to provide experiential training to 75 women on starting agri-businesses such as dairy farming and poultry farming, and connected them to relevant markets. Following our short 4-month pilot, these women had increased their earnings significantly from 6,000/- to 15,000/- per month. • ACT provides after-school coaching to 345 children (70% of whom are girls) to improve literacy, writing and comprehension for those who may otherwise drop out of school in the face of challenges with learning in multiple languages. One of our objectives is to implement the mental health community services in Dadra & Nagar Haveli, using a resource team of 18-20 participants within the adivasi community, specially trained for more than 1 year in Community Mental Health Training Programme (CMHTP), by leading Mental Health Organisation in India - Ummeed CDC. These resource persons work toward building emotional safe spaces to create promotive and preventive mental health practices within the communities among children and their care-givers youth and women.
