Mission Statement
Our ethos: “It is easier to build strong children than to repair broken [adults].” —Frederick Douglass The Opentree Foundation is a Mumbai-based non-profit founded in 2004, which uses play as a transformative tool to impact the wellbeing, learning and holistic development of children from low-income communities. Our journey is rooted in the belief that play provides the most optimised environment for children to learn and grow, and that by empowering children, educators, community leaders and policymakers through play-based learning, we can transform the future of our country and society. We work with 1,50,000 children across 12 districts of Maharashtra through our flagship project Toybank. Toybank’s Life Skills Play Programmes are implemented in more than 500 Play Centres, set up in Government and low-income semi-government schools, and Government and Non-government CICs (Child in Institutional Care) NGOs, and CBOs (Community based Organizations). These play programmes, based on our Our Conscious Play® approach, build cognitive and behavioural skills that help children learn better, think critically, solve problems and build positive social relationships, all of which are essential for a well-rounded adulthood.
About This Cause
Our approach to using play for systemic change currently engages stakeholders like teachers, school leaders, government officials and community members. We are working towards expanding this reach to parents, policymakers and experts, so that the impact of play can be used to achieve transformative impact at scale across Maharashtra. We envision working alongside the government to implement scalable, feasible, measurable play programmes that address students’ developmental needs as well as build teacher capacities so they are able to implement the NEP by adapting experiential, application-based teaching practices while fostering student well being.
