Mission Statement

Every youth a Jagrik, every space nurturing Jagriks. A Jagrik is a self – awakened active citizen not only leading the change but also being the change. We need to create the right space, context and narratives for every Jagrik to meet their full potential by nurturing agency, shared power equation structure and co-leadership.

About This Cause

ComMutiny has collectivised over 100 youth-centric organizations and youth-work practitioners in the country into an effective, collaborative ecosystem. We host regular consultations and conclaves for learning, programming, partnerships and collective decision making for the collective. Furthering these efforts, in partnership with UNICEF, we started a two-year large-scale collectivisation and capacity building initiative for strengthening adolescent leadership and participation that led to the incubation of state collectives across six states - Gujarat, Assam, West Bengal, Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand and Bihar. With UNFPA’s support we have also collectivised 11 youth engaging organisations in Uttar Pradesh through the Be a Jagrik initiative. In 2019, ComMutiny the vartaLeap coalition - a cross-sectoral grouping of 180+ youth engaging organizations and individuals from development sector, government, media, educational institutions, and UN agencies who seek to take the mission of ‘Every youth a Jagrik…Every space nurturing Jagriks’ forward at scale with soul to move youth-centric development from the margins and make it a new norm in every space that young people occupy or that impacts young people. The vartaLeap Coalition provides a space for co-learning and leadership and co-creating and piloting innovations. We have together agreed to channel our youth centric programming experience into a common set of design principles that we will ourselves use and propagate widely. The space also ensures visibility of the coalition and a common voice for its members. With a diversity in membership, the coalition ensures a great reach to varied ‘youth interested’ stakeholders and is well poised to be able to have a wide reach collectively, to influence the norm in a variety of spaces. Together, this ecosystem has over 250 members in 21 states across India and they represent a large cross section of a very diverse youth population. The coalition has representation of youth workers and young people from rural, urban, tribal, Dalit, LGBTQI+ and other population groups. IMPACT WE HAVE CREATED SO FAR: 1. Some of our flagship innovations are: - Must Bol: A campaign against gender-based violence in partnership with P4P, UNWomen and UNFPA was quoted as a landmark campaign to be replicated by other groups in an American Center worldwide call for proposals. Young people made 60 short films with guidance from experts after an in-depth immersion on understanding issues of gender-based violence. They used these films as campaign material to create deep conversations on changing social norms with different communities. While the program itself had a transformative impact on the young people in the journey, their voice and their actions created a powerful new discourse in the youth work field itself. These films are now used as powerful content for many of the leading programs in the country on issues of GBV and VAW. The entire playlist is available on the Must Bol Channel . - My Space...My unManifesto : A campaign to enhance young people's participation in democracy in partnership with UNFPA was considered by many as a first of its kind initiative to crowdsource a youth manifesto which was presented to 100 representatives of leading political parties. The campaign was also presented at various youth and civil society and the UN and Commonwealth platforms and received wide acclaim. Watch how young people amplify their voice on governance issues in The Tipping point of Democracy. - Samvidhan LIVE! Be a Jagrik: A learning journey of active citizens to learn about and live the values enshrined in the Constitution of India through powerful self and social action projects in their communities. This won the prestigious award for digital campaigning and media by the Digital Empowerment Foundation and was covered my both national and regional media and Lok Sabha TV doing a one hour program to showcase the actions and advocacy by the Jagriks. The Jagriks made an appeal to the public representatives and shared their experience and insights in An Open Letter To The President . - Jabardast Jagrik: Nurturing early stage changemakers to promote governance and participation at the grassroots level. 200 Jabardast Jagriks lead 100 social action projects in Uttar Pradesh, addressing issues such as MHM, SRHR, GBV and Girls’ Education - Samjho Toh – The Samvidhan LIVE Dialogues: A powerful coming together of young people with polarized ideologies on the idea of India, through healing conversations across fault lines, bringing back the culture of dialogue, collaboration and co-creation. - Gender Jagrik: While curative approaches have worked to a large extent to empower women to stand up for their rights, preventive processes have made fledgling progress. The initiative aims to create impact on deeply entrenched gender norms by working with young men and boys in the age group of 15-29, who understand fully the mind-sets and power structures of the communities
