Mission Statement
SAATHII works to strengthen and expand access to stigma-free health, rights and social protection for communities marginalised on account of HIV, gender and/sexuality in India.
About This Cause
SAATHII, founded in 2002, is a non-profit organisation headquartered in Chennai, India. As of 2019, it has 14 offices in 12 states of India. Originally constituted as a group that advocated for access to HIV treatment and LGBT+ rights, at present SAATHII works nation-wide to enhance access to healthcare, justice and social protection. Ultimate beneficiaries of SAATHII's action include people living with or affected by HIV, pregnant women and children, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender women, transgender men, intersex and other queer (LGBTIQA+) persons. SAATHII strives to bring together multiple stakeholders, including the public sector, private (profit and non-profit) sector, and marginalised communities, for supply- and demand-side interventions that contribute towards universal access. Technical assistance, capacity building, evidence-based advocacy, documentation and dissemination of good practices, and research that improves program implementation: these are among are key activity areas. An early adopter of information communications technologies (ICT) for public health, SAATHII initiated one of the first online courses for civil society organisations and clinicians in research methodology and data analysis for public health and advocacy. In 2018 SAATHII initiated a large blended clinical training initiative in partnership with the National AIDS Control Organisation to train over 15,000 doctors, nurses, and lab technicians in HIV medicine and care. SAATHII has also contributed extensively to LGBTIQA+ community strengthening in the country, advocate successfully for transmen-inclusive welfare boards in Manipur and Gujarat, and has been on the forefront of gender-sexuality sensitization for medical and legal service providers and other stakeholders. SAATHII, working together with USAID, has also helped the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare develop an online multi-channel patient feedback tool (Mera Aspataal) that generates reports from over 1000 hospitals across the country. These data are on patient satisfaction with services, and are used as part of quality improvement measures. To learn more, write info@saathii.org
