HPPI has received many awards and accolades for our programs with Out-of-school children, communities and women entrepreneurs including 4th India CSR Summit organised by NGOBOX in 2017 for HPPI's flagship program Kadam-bridge education program for out of school children and prestigious NASSCOM Social Innovation Forum Award 2016 for Education Category. HPPI wish to address issues of national and global importance that affect the lives of all of us and especially the poor, and design programmes that are unique in their human-centric and participatory approach, mobilizing and organising people to address the issues affecting them such as, poor quality of education for the poor; financial exclusion of the poor, especially women; global warming and climate change affecting income and livelihoods for small scale farmers; the threat of the big epidemics and lifestyle diseases such as HIV/AIDS, TB and Diabetes; lack of access to health-care for pregnant women and young children; poor nutrition among over 40% of India’s children; a difficult and deprived present and an unsecured future for adolescents and youth both girls and boys. Through our development programs, we are currently working directly towards achieving 15 out of 17 SDGs, and aspire to contribute effectively in achieving SDGs in India by 2030.

About This Cause

A strong educational foundation is a core change agent in the 21st century. The rapid changes in the socio-economic climates and shifts in employment patterns have made it pertinent for an individual to possess basic education foundation skills (the 3R's- Reading, wRiting and numeRacy) to harness the flow of information, make informed decisions and leverage better educational or employment opportunities, all of which together will contribute to better quality of life. Recognizing the importance of strong educational foundations, and also the importance of imbuing these at an early stage, Humana People to People India (HPPI) has been working closely with State Governments and private sector partners to enhance access to elementary education and improve the quality of elementary education in schools- in line with the vision of SDG4 and the Right to Education Act 2009. Through years of experience with first-generation learners at the grass-roots, HPPI has developed extensive expertise in the field and has developed specially designed programmes to address the basic educational pipeline, with an aim to create an impact that is measurable, scalable and sustainable. Our flagship model, Kadam focusses on bridging the gap in the education of out-of-school children of migrant workers and underprivileged families. Kadam- The Step-Up Programme: is a unique accelerated learning course specially developed for out-of-school children (OOSC) to enable them to be mainstreamed into formal schools after plugging the learning deficits. Kadam combines self-navigated learning with guided learning through an active process blending theory and activity. Learning progress of the child is mapped through Steps, which are buckets of learning competencies structured according to mandated grade-level competencies. Kadam is structured as a 1-year programme, and OOSC can plug up to 3 years' learning deficit in 1 year through this programme. The entire learning content and assessment tools have been developed in house by HPPI. Nearly 83,000 out-of-school children have been a part of the Kadam Programme since the year 2016, and have been assisted with guidance and appropriate tools to close their learning gaps so they can be integrated into age-appropriate regular classes in formal schools. In response to the COVID-19 crisis, HPPI is providing holistic support to the families; from essential supplies to thoughtfully designed “Teaching Learning Material” to bridge the gap in the education of students. Our solution includes 1. Activity Based Learning kit – student book, checklist and assessment etc. 2. Interaction with students over the phone with the teachers and volunteers 3. Involving parents to carry out learning activities and tracking progress on the phone 4. Thematic learning to develop social, emotional and life skills of the children 5. Tech-driven learning through videos and activity descriptions shared via WhatsApp / SMS HPPI staff is in close contact with government schools for mainstreaming Out of School Children in age-appropriate classes when the classes resume so that their formal learning never stops. The teachers and volunteers' continuous contact has ensured that learning continues under the lockdown and chances of children dropping out of the school are minimized.
