Mission Statement

Meaningful Education to Disadvantaged Rural Children

About This Cause

FORMAL EDUCATION Brahmi Educational and Cultural Trust (Brahmi) is a Registered Nonprofit, humanitarian Charity dedicated to the Education of disadvantaged children in rural India. Brahmi aims to transform the lives of these children through MEANINGFUL or IMPACTFUL EDUCATION combining best practices of formal education with skills they can use in their lives. Brahmi’s established, Anjana Vidya Kendra in 2001, an English Medium School in a village about 50km east of Bangalore, India. Anjana is now a full-fledged High School (Grade 1 to Grade 10) that is transforming the lives of about 350 children each year, most of them belonging to small-time farmers and farm workers. Most children are first-time learners in the family. The school is recognized by the Govt. of Karnataka and follows the National Curriculum of Education. KEY CHALLENGES The key challenge is the lack of interest and awareness among rural farmers and farmworkers. Education is not a priority among most parents; they do not consider it important to educate girls. Health and Hygiene are neglected issues, compounded by unsafe living practices. Malnutrition poses a huge challenge for children on their pathof learning and growing. Lack of English skills (in both spoken as well as writing formats), weak Math and Science skills at the end of school education are some of the major hurdles for these rural children that prevent them from achieving success in higher education and in their lives. OUR UNIQUE PRACTICES Our aim is to make schooling a joyful experience for children. Our school is situated amidst three-acre farmland and has a child-friendly ambience. Apart from formal education, the focus is on exposing children to the best of rural practices such as soil protection, Animal Care, Biogas and worm composting, safe/organic farming and environmental issues. We strongly believe formal education that takes away farming and rural values from their lives will lead to dangerous consequences. In addition, there is a need to emphasize the spiritual value that humans are only a link in the chain of life. Our gurukul method integrates curricular education with healthy living practices. The school maitains a Biodynamic Farm consisting of a small dairy of 20 cows, a biogas unit and a worm composting unit, and an organic vegetable farm. Our noon-meal scheme revolves around these units providing wholesome and protein-rich food to all our children. FOCUS ON ENGLISH AND SCIENCE EDUCATION Anjana Vidya Kendra High School is equipped with an excellent library, an IT centre with 20 computers, a fully equipped and functional laboratory and technology-enabled classrooms. A solar-based 15 kVA inverter supports the school facilities and also provides lighting to the school. Anjana science centre also maintains a Climate Action Laboratory in association with CSR partners, preparing young researchers and change-makers of tomorrow. The curricular and co-curricular programs are sustained in the school by a team of young, trained and dedicated teachers and volunteers. Several individual and corporate volunteering activities have taken place engaging our children in spoken English sessions and soft-skills training. An interesting program by a volunteer titled "Pehla Venture" has trained our high school students in entrepreneurial skills. Anjana Science Center is now a technology centre in the region. The goal is to provide access to activity-based science learning not only to students of Anjana Vidya Kendra School but also to students from nearby schools. The centre conducts several science promotion programs such as Weekend science Demonstration by students, Extramural Lectures by eminent speakers and students and Annual Science Festivals. A team of teachers and volunteers are currently working on developing outdoor demonstration and display models using commonly available and familiar farm tools to promote interest and excitement among rural children. VOLUNTEERING Volunteering is an integral part of the organization. School actively celebrates several events and festivals of religious and national importance with the help of volunteers. Several parents participate and get involved in all these celebrations. Volunteers also sustain regular weekend and monthly activities promoting spoken English and personality development, theatre, dance and painting, farm activities and teacher orientation programs.
