LVPEI focuses on economically disadvantaged groups in rural and urban geographies and extends our services to them through 307 network eye care comprises a ‘Centre of Excellence in Hyderabad, 4 tertiary centres in Bhubaneswar, Visakhapatnam and Vijayawada, 22 secondary plus 4 City Centres and 270 primary care centres that cover the remotest rural areas in the four states of Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Odisha and Karnataka. And helped upgrade eye care programs in 18 states of India and 16 other countries. The activities of the Institute over the past 36 years (as of March 2023) have been organized in the following core areas: 1) Patient Care: We provide treatment for all eye diseases under various sub-specialties, while also offering a complete range of services through specialized clinics. The Institute has an exclusive clinic for visually impaired children including newborns and infants and a comprehensive oncology unit. In 36 years, we have served over 36.89 million people and conducted over 2.11 million surgeries, over 50% of them entirely free of cost, to people coming from economically underprivileged backgrounds irrespective of the complexity of care required. LVPEI has provided direct service to over 13,042 villages through secondary and primary care eye centres 2) Vision Rehabilitation and Sight Enhancement: LVPEI is the only centre anywhere, where clinical patient services and rehabilitation are provided on the same campus. Rehabilitation and sight enhancement services are a combination of learning daily living and work-related skills, and the use of suitable low vision devices, along with customized counseling. Over 0.21 million people have been served at our rehabilitation centres especially persons with irreversible blindness or low vision. 3) Eye Banking: The Ramayamma International Eye Bank (RIEB) at LVPEI is the largest provider of sight-restoring corneas in India and a SightLife Center of Excellence in Eye Banking. The Eye Banking at LVPEI executes all aspects of community eye banking which include: the recovery, evaluation and preservation of donor tissues; distribution of tissues for corneal transplantation; research in cornea preservation and decontamination techniques; and public awareness programs. The corneas are collected from donors for in-house use and for distribution to other centres. We harvested over 129,568 donor corneas and performed over 77,203 corneal transplants. It has the distinction of performing the most significant number of penetrating keratoplasties (corneal transplants) by a single centre in the world. RIEB trains various cadres of personnel from India and other countries in the planning of eye banking services, policy-making and eye banking techniques. It also conducts the Indian Eye Banking Education Programme to educate eye bankers on the basics and latest advancements in eye banking. 4) Education in Eye Care: Ophthalmologists with postgraduate qualifications are offered fellowships in subspecialties, as well as courses to improve their skills and knowledge. Optometrists with BSc (Optom) and DOpt are trained likewise. In addition, 4-year BSc (Optom) and 5-year MS (Optom) degrees are offered in collaboration with the Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani, and the University of Hyderabad. Nurses are given on-the-job training as ophthalmic nurses; in fact, all cadres of eye professionals are trained. Till date, LVPEI has trained over 61,608 eye care professionals. 5) Research: Basic research is conducted into the genetic, molecular, and cellular biology, and microbiology aspects of eye disorders. Clinical research includes clinical trials and public health research, particularly epidemiology, on the prevalence of blinding conditions. The Institute has facilitated the award of 65 Ph.D. degrees and published over 4514 peer-reviewed research papers. 6) Public Health and Rural Outreach: LVPEI’s public health and outreach programs are conceptualized as “high quality primary care to a finite population, with permanent infrastructure and well trained human resources, serving marginalized populations in the most underserved areas.” The outreach activity extends to the rural parts delivering quality eye care to people at their doorstep. Since over 70% of Indians live in villages, it becomes imperative to take quality eye care to them. This is the basis of the five-tier pyramid model of eye care delivery, conceptualized by LVPEI, which today serves people across all levels of care - from primary to quaternary. Of the 307 locations that LVPEI currently operates from, 270 are primary care centres and 22 secondary care centres (20-beded hospitals), located in remote rural areas. LVPEI has become an internationally renowned eye care institution for innovations in the delivery of eye care from primary to tertiary levels, for excellence in training, research and for successfully reconciling “Excellence with Equity” –the essence of our vision Now as of April 2023, LVPEI is looking towards growth for the next 25 years to meet the demands to reach out to more. We have identified areas mentioned below, where we need support: 1. Child Sight Institute: To set up a speciality institute of children’s eye health and eye care from prevention to rehabilitation. With a vision that “No child goes needlessly blind” 2. Academy for Eye Care Education: To meet the demand for well-trained eye care personnel by providing both short and long term training in Super specialists and PhDs, Clinical, Public Health, Research in India and also trainees from other parts of the world. To be a major educational resource in the world. 3. Institute for Eye Cancer: We are looking for support to improve upon the already well established and comprehensive centre through more advanced treatment methods and reaching more people by increasing the capacity for adapting New Technologies and Research. 4. Centre of Excellence in Eye Banking: The Centre will facilitate corneal donations and this will help augment the capacity of eye banks across India and other developing countries. The Centre will be developed with active collaboration from several world-renowned eye centres and research organizations in North America, Europe, Asia and Australia and Brazil. 5. Centre for Ocular Regeneration (CORE): To address many unmanageable eye problems built on our expertise in stem cell biology and transplantation. We believe that it takes many partnerships to eliminate needless blindness “SO THAT ALL MAY SEE”
