About This Cause

Livelihood Training Programmes Only when Women gain the respect due them and their rightful place in society will the country prosper. This can be achieved mainly by building confidence in the women of our country especially the rural people. One way of making women confident is making them economically independent. We have realized that the rural women lack livelihood skills to make a meaningful living. With a view to mitigate this problem, the KGNMT, Hyd. Branch has been conducting a number of livelihood training programmes which will help women to earn their own living and thereby raise the standard of living of their entire family. We have successfully completed training programmes in several cottage industries like candle making, tie and dye, block printing on saris, sari rolling, making paper-cups, paper-bags, jute bags, tailoring, book binding etc. This program is not a one-off programme but a continuous one. We continue to conduct livelihood training programmes for women on a regular basis with the active support of benevolent philanthropists. These trainings have helped many a women to earn their own livelihood. This in turn has lead to better standards of living and enough confidence to face society boldly. They have also earned the respect of their men folk because these women not only run the house but also contribute to the family kitty in good measure. The children in these households are not only eating but are also being given education. General Awareness Program We also conducting General Awareness Program for the benefit of the poor and illiterate women. The women were given awareness on cleanliness, hygienic, health, nutrition as well as their rights under the law of the country. We also have successfully conducted awareness programmes for the volunteers of other NGOs in collaboration with the Social Welfare Department. SWADHAR The KGNMT, Hyderabad branch is also running a major programme called SWADHAR, a shelter home for women in distress with active support of Women and Child Welfare Department. This programme is meant to help those women who have been distressed, deserted or otherwise rendered homeless, to overcome their problems and to rehabilitate them. In cases where necessary these women are also given livelihood skills as per their calling and flair to help in their rehabilitation. There are presently 178 inmates housed at the KGNMT,. Hyderabad 46 of them are studying in Schools, 32 in the primary section and 14 in the upper primary section and secondary section. Te younger children are the children of some of the inmates housed at the Trust. The Women and Child Welfare Department pays for the upkeep of 50 inmates @ Rs. 500/- per month per inmate. The rest of the inmates are taken care of by the trust. Of the 178 inmates, 54 are mentally unsound, 3 are dumb,6 are HIV + (one of whom is in an advanced stage of pregnancy), 2 are pregnant (1 is HIV+) and most of the others are young mothers. These women have been used and abused by their very own people and left on the streets to fend for themselves. They are in a state of depression and frustration at their inability to fight a society which has been so callous towards them. It is to build confidence in them and give them a chance to live a life of dignity, that the Trust is laying a great stress on educating them. All those who have had some education before their arrival at the Trust, are being encouraged to pursue their education. The little ones 22 have been admitted in private English Medium School, and the other 14 in a Private Telugu Medium School. All the children are very happy going to school and are making good progress in their studies. 8 adolescent girls were studying in +2, two girls are in engineering. The cost of educating these children is being met by philanthropists either in cash or in kind. The mentally unsound inmates are being given regular treatment at the mental hospital at Erragadda. The medicines are making a real difference in the progress of their health. Some of them were very violent when the first came to the Trust, but with counseling and treatment they have mellowed down and are now mingling with the others. The HIV patients have been tested and are on Retro Viral Treatment. The rest of the women are made to engage themselves either in livelihood training or in any activity that has to be done for the successful running of the shelter home. This is to see that their minds are not idle. The lives of these women are pathetic. Each has a story to tell, one worse than the other. In most cases it is the guardians who are the accused. The very people who were to protect and guard the m have indulged in mindless cruelty towards them. These little ones do not trust anyone now. They are cynical of everyone. They need marge doses of love and encouragement and a chance to begin their life all over again. • The KGNMT, Hyderabad also runs a vibrant Balwadi which caters to children of ages 0-6. Balwadi is a place which is deal for working women to leave their little ones without a thought about their safety. Balwadi also helps the children in improving their health and hygiene apart from training them in school activities. It is reliably learnt that the children who attend Balwadis stand a better chance of completing their schooling later in life. The Arogya Kendra, which had fallen into disuse, has been revived. We have Dr. Balatripura Sundari (MD, DCh) who visits the Trust twice a week. We also have a nurse who comes in everyday to check on the inmates. We are also supported by the services of Dr. Anuj Kapadia (MD, DM) & Dr. Sunitha (MBBS). We also give regular counseling to all the inmates of the shelter home with the help of a counselor. The counselling centre is open for all . We are now concentrating on pre and post marital counsellings • We are organizing tree plantation programmes in collaboration with diffrerent other organizations. About 50 plants were planted in the trust premises and also in the village and the plants outside the trust premises were provided with tree guards and the villagers have been requested to take care of them. They were also explained the importance of ‘clean and green’. • We regularly celebrate national festivals on August 15th and January 26th, Independence Day and Republic Day respectively. • We also mark Gandhi Jayanthi on October 2nd and Ba and Bapu’s Vardhanti on January 30th and 22 February every year prayers and a meeting of the villagers. Apart from this KGNM Trust adresses women related issues. We promote Gandhian Thought among Schools and Colleges by conducting Quiz competitions and essay writing competitions At large KGNM Trust is doing Yeomen services for the vulnerable and less privileged sections of the society mainly for women and children.
