About This Cause

PRAJWALA- AN ETERNAL FLAME (A PIONEERING ANTI TRAFFICKING ORGANIZATION) Trafficking of women and children is a crime against humanity—a form of modern-day slavery in which the victim is subjected to conditions of violence, violation of personal integrity and total humiliation. Hundreds of thousands of young adults and children are traded for flesh trade in the guise of jobs, marriage, film roles, modeling and love every year. More often than not these traders of human misery are not strangers to the victims, most of whom end up with life threatening HIV/AIDS or a lifetime of trauma and personality disintegration. Today, sex trafficking in women and children is one of the fastest growing areas of national and international criminal activity. Every country in the world is affected by trafficking, whether it is a country of origin, transit or destination for victims. In India alone, 3 million women and children fall into traps of deception and are forced into prostitution. This 32 billion dollar global industry has created a complex criminal network that thrives on human vulnerability for the purpose of commercial sexual exploitation. The Mission Prajwala emerged as a response to the needs of women and child victims of forced prostitution, with the conviction that sex trafficking is the worst form of human rights violation. The organization believes in a trafficking-free society where no woman or child is sexually exploited and no human being is treated as a commodity. Prajwala also believes that it is only through networking and sustained partnership with likeminded groups and communities that every effort can be taken to counter trafficking in every dimension. The Genesis The philosophy of Prajwala evolved after one of the oldest red light areas of Hyderabad city was forcibly evacuated in 1996, when thousands of women in prostitution were suddenly uprooted and displaced with insecure status and life prospects for themselves and their families. Based on the mothers’ plea for a dignified future for their children, two visionaries Brother Jose Vetticatil and Dr. Sunitha Krishnan joined forces to initiate an intervention called Prevention through Education, which initially consisted of a small school program run in a transition center. The process of interaction with the women posed a threat to the traffickers, the middle-men, and the brokers, which led to a long challenge and struggle for the core team of Prajwala. The founders were faced with life threatening situations a number of times, which they braved through with the conviction that a viable alternative is possible. The enormity of the situation and the vastness of the task did not stop Prajwala from making a small change in this community. The Approach As the journey progressed, Prajwala has expanded to meet the multifold needs of victims and establish a wide range of anti-trafficking initiatives, with full faith in people’s participation in the process of change. Over the years, the multi-pronged strategy Prajwala has developed to combat sexual slavery and break the walls of learnt helplessness includes community based prevention, rescue and restoration, rehabilitation, reintegration, and advocacy interventions. Prevention: • The Prevention through Education Program uses schooling as a primary tool to educate children of women in prostitution so that they have a life full of viable options and do not enter work in support of the flesh trade. • The Community-Based Prevention Program conducts a wide range of sensitization programs to bring about awareness of the organized crime of sex trafficking to make the general public vigilant and cautious. Rescue: • The Rescue and Restoration Program conducts rescue operations and crisis counseling for victims of commercial sexual exploitation by extending moral, financial, legal and social support conducive to their transformation and reintegration. Rehabilitation: • The Prajwala Shelter Home for children and adults provides a safe, non-threatening environment for the victims that facilitates the holistic healing and recovery process. • The Economic Rehabilitation Program provides training in non-conventional trades such as welding/fabrication, bookbinding, carpentry and screen printing, as well as employability assessment and placement to give survivors alternative livelihoods other than prostitution. Reintegration: • Family reunion, marriage and independent living allow survivors to successfully reintegrate into mainstream society. Advocacy: • Policy, legal and media advocacy campaigns are held to sensitize stakeholders, develop victim-friendly legislation and strengthen the survivors network “Aparajita”. • The Anti-Trafficking Resource Cell documents all interventions and coordinates publication, media and volunteer outreach.
