Mission Statement
Pratham Books (www.prathambooks.org) is a not-for-profit children's books publisher. We publish low-cost affordable books in over 24 Indian languages and in English. StoryWeaver (www.storyweaver.org.in) is a digital repository of openly licensed multilingual children's stories. Donate-a-book ( www.donateabook.org.in ) is a crowdfunding platform that is built to connect organizations who need books with those who could help them get these books for their children.
About This Cause
PRATHAM BOOKS: Pratham Books was set up as a not-for-profit children’s book publisher in 2004 with the mission to see ‘a book in every child's hand’. The key objective was to publish good quality, affordable storybooks in multiple Indian languages to support reading acquisition among children. In the last decade, Pratham Books has published over 500+ original titles in 24 Indian languages and in English. The books cover a range of genres including early readers, fiction, non-fiction, and storybooks on science, history, mathematics, and nature. Pratham Books has the distinction of working with many of the country's renowned authors and illustrators and our books have won several awards as well. STORYWEAVER FROM PRATHAM BOOKS Pratham Books has made its stories available for free on their digital platform, StoryWeaver. There are over 37,000 stories available in 300+ languages – Indian and International. All the content is available under Creative Commons licenses. Apart from being able to read, download, and print all these stories, we have also embedded some tools for content creation—to enable people to repurpose the content into more languages and versions. The goal is to bring together content users and content creators and create a participatory culture that will catalyze the creation of more content. Such an approach of providing one-access has helped us reach teachers, educators, and children the world over. The platform has garnered over 50 million reads—over nine million directly on the platform and much more offline. StoryWeaver can be accessed on desktops, laptops, tablets, and mobile phones and all the content is in digitally compliant formats. (www.storyweaver.org.in) DONATE-A-BOOK FROM PRATHAM BOOKS In a unique initiative to get India's children to read, Pratham Books launched its Donate-a-Book platform. The platform will help bridge the gap between those who need books for children to learn and practice reading with those who can help provide the books. There are several organizations that work with children in need but often do not have well-equipped libraries for them. Most times, these organizations do not even have the resources to be able to buy books that are relevant for their children. While most used book donation drives are done with the best of intentions to provide books for disadvantaged children, there is, unfortunately, a mismatch between what is collected and what is needed on the ground. The requirement is for simple readers in Indian languages and the books that get donated are usually English books for fluent readers. 'Donate-a-book' is unique as it gives a platform to organizations to showcase their work and links them with donors who would like to support their work by funding books for them. The platform has helped reach more than 300,000 books to over 600,000 children in 600+ organizations across India.
