About This Cause

About Udayan Care “Udayan” is a Sanskrit word that means “Eternal Sunrise”. We strive to bring sunshine into the lives of the underserved sections of society that require intervention. Registered in 1994 as a Public Charitable Trust, Udayan Care works to empower vulnerable children, women, and youth, in 36 cities across 15 states of India. In 29 years, we have directly impacted the lives of over 38000 children, women, and youth as beneficiaries as well as lakhs more as indirect beneficiaries through our programs, training, and advocacy efforts. This was made possible only through the support of like-minded people, donors, partners, volunteers, and staff, who believed in our work and mission. Udayan Care believes that family is the foundation for the development of a strong individual. Each of our initiatives is guided by the purpose of strengthening the family unit. Through the power of mentorship, we nurture children without parental care in the warmth of a simulated family environment. Once the children reach the age of 18 years, they move into our Aftercare program and continue with higher education or vocational training to enable them to form families of their own. We also focus on reintegrating children back into their families as institutional care should be the last resort for any child. We strengthen these families so that children are not separated from them. Furthermore, we enable girls from economically weaker sections to receive higher education and strengthen their families. We also empower underserved youth and women to improve their employability skills and make their families stronger through financial independence. Our Advocacy agenda revolves around children and youth’s successful reintegration into society as empowered individuals. Why We Exist? To transform the lives of children and youth from underserved sections of society, through meaningful interventions for development at every step of their journey towards a dignified life. Vision Making Young Lives Shine. Udayan Care’s programs are divided into three focus areas: 1. Child & Youth Care (CYC): Udayan Care is committed to the holistic development of children and youth in difficult circumstances. Our CYC efforts are executed through: Udayan Ghar Program: Small group homes for children (6-18Yrs) in need of parental care. Our focus is on the holistic development of the child through education, individual attention, and mentoring. We have 16 homes in Delhi NCR, Kurukshetra, and Jaipur with separate facilities for girls and boys. Since its inception in 1996, the Udayan Ghar program has nurtured 1800+ children. Udayan Ghar Aftercare Program: Continuum of care for children leaving the Udayan Ghar program upon turning 18 years. We provide support through paid accommodation, fees for academics or vocational training, counseling, and mentoring to teach them life skills for independent living for a period of 4-5 years. We have supported 200+ young adults through this program so far. Aftercare Outreach Program (AOP): Continuum of care for care leavers exiting other Childcare Institutions (CCIs) through the pursuit of education, skilling, employability readiness, mentoring, and independent life skills from 18-21 years. The program has 6 chapters which have benefited 220+ youth so far. Learning in Fellowship Together (LIFT): A one-year fellowship that enables care leavers to aspire and fulfill their dreams to contribute to improving the situation of Care Leaving in India. It was launched in 2021 with 8 fellows hailing from 6 states of India. Families Together (FiT) project: This project is aimed at developing a demonstrable and scalable model of family strengthening. By supporting families to care for their children we work towards preventing them from unnecessary separation and institutionalization. State programs: Our demonstration projects in Bihar and Madhya Pradesh aim to promote and strengthen systems for Alternative Care and Aftercare, with support from respective state governments and UNICEF field officers in both states. At the state level, the programs have impacted the systemic capacities of child protection functionaries across districts in building a perspective to work on CYC and thereby improving the implementation of the Alternative Care and Aftercare programs. We are also working with UNICEF in supporting and training functionaries in Alternative Care and Aftercare in the state of Telangana. Collectivizing Care Leavers in networks: Young people with direct experience of leaving care are best placed to change the care system. With this conviction, we helped put together the first care leavers network in Delhi in 2017 followed by similar networks in Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, and Bihar. Members from all these networks interact with each other, offer support to each other, and build their own connections. 2. Education, Skilling, Empowerment (ESE): Our education and skilling efforts aim to empower girls and youth through the following programs: Udayan Shalini Fellowship Program - An academic excellence and leadership development program for underprivileged girls after Class XI till graduation. The program combines scholarship with one-on-one mentoring, exhaustive training on life skills, confidence building, personality development, and employability skills to transform them into dignified and empowered women graduates or Shalinis. Today, many of our Shalinis are pursuing fields like Engineering, Medical Studies, Chartered Accountancy, Company Secretaryship, Vocational Training, Nursing, and Computer Science, among others. USF is present in 32 chapters across 13 states and has supported 12900+ girls. Udayan Care IT Program - Udayan Care’s Information Technology Centers were initiated in 2004 to enable underserved youth to improve their livelihood options and contribute to their family income. The program offers certificate and diploma courses in basic as well as advanced computer applications, such as Microsoft, Tally, and Graphic and Print design, keeping employable skills at the center of its approach. Currently, there are 19 Information Technology Centers across India and 11 of these centers have been empaneled with NSDC (National Skill Development Council). Since inception, our Centers have equipped 22600+ students with the dignity of self-reliance and the placement cell has facilitated employment for 3800+ youth. Skill Development Centers – Our skill Centers train underprivileged women in different skills like Stitching and Tailoring, Beauty Therapy, Paper Craft, Enamel Work, Block Printing, Graphic Design, China painting, etc., and enable them to earn and become economically independent. Our range of products, under the brand name Sukriti - the Hindi word for ‘beautiful creations’, are hand-made using natural fabrics. Since their inception, these centers have successfully trained 1500+ underserved women. 3. Advocacy, Research, Training (ART): Our advocacy efforts explore different aspects of policy and practice around alternative care for children and youth through research, publications, consultations, training, seminars, and workshops. ART works to amplify the work we do for child and youth care at global, national, and local levels. The A.R.T.’s portfolio includes: Conferences and Presentations: Udayan Care has instituted Biennial Conference on Alternative Care (BICON), focused on South Asia, to bring together practitioners, policymakers, and researchers. 4 such global conferences have been held to date. The 5th BICON is going to be held in September 2023. Besides, we have organized many seminars and consultations all over India on Alternative Care and Aftercare. Research, Publications & Knowledge products: Udayan care has published over 76 research papers, opinion pieces, and blogs in national and international journals of repute. With the purpose of raising awareness and developing the capacity of everyone involved in child protection and alternative care in India, Udayan Care has also developed a set of three unique curricula for children, youth, and functionaries. All the content is contextualized according to Indian legal, policy, and practice experience. ICB Journal: Udayan Care’s academic, bi-annual, double-peer-reviewed, journal, “Institutionalized Children: Explorations and Beyond”, launched in March 2014, is now co-published with SAGE. It addresses the gaps in research, knowledge, and practices, prevalent in working with children in Alternative Care, in 8 South Asian countries. Nine volumes (18 issues) have been published so far. The 1st part of the 10th volume (19th issue) has just been launched. Udayan Care’s Volunteer & Internship Program Udayan Care’s Volunteer Program enables individuals and corporates in India and globally to share their time, skills, and resources with less privileged children and youth. Besides a very robust Trust Board and Advisory Board at the head office, most of our chapters across India have inspired people to volunteer with us as mentors, core committee members, and resource persons. Our internship program provides students with on-the-job exposure to the not-for-profit sector. The organization has been receiving volunteers and interns from universities and corporations across the globe.
