About Sankara Eye Foundation India (A Unit of Sri Kanchi Kamakoti Medical Trust) AN EXCEPTIONAL JOURNEY OF 4 DECADES Sankara Eye Foundation India (SEFI) was started as a small primary health centre in 1977 and gradually blossomed into an effectual organization to deliver tertiary eye care to the underserved population. Strong commitment towards eradicating curable blindness across the Nation facilitated it to expand across 10 states of India with 14 eye hospitals and growing. Today Sankara is amongst the largest and fastest growing networks of super specialty eye care providers having eye hospitals located across Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Gujarat, Punjab, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Telangana and Uttar Pradesh. TRANSFORMING EYE CARE - REACHING THE UNREACHED: Community Eye Care: A unique model that offers free-of-cost super specialty eye care services to the lower socio-economic groups through its well-structured community outreach programs 'Gift of Vision' and 'Rainbow' for adults and children respectively. Its primary goal is to fight preventable and curable blindness. Women Empowerment: “Vision Care Technician Training” becomes an apt skill development course to meet the demand of trained eye care professionals in India. This program achieves twin objectives of empowering young women coming from poor socio-economic sections of society and at the same time develops the human resources to meet the eye care needs of country. This special vocational course was initiated at Sankara in the year 2002 and over the years over 800 VCTs has been trained. The program is completely subsidized by Sankara. EDUCATION, TRAINING AND RESEARCH Sankara Academy of Vision (SAV), the education, training and research arm of Sankara has been involved in human resource development. Starting from post-graduation in Ophthalmology (DNB), university recognized fellowship programs in various sub specialties of Ophthalmology, under-graduation and post-graduation in Optometry, Vision Care Technical course for 10+2 pass female students, post-graduate diploma in hospital management and various hospital management and soft skill development programs come under the purview of SAV. Today, SAV offers research opportunities for Ophthalmology educators, practitioners, and fellow students. Since inception, SEFI through its Sankara Eye Hospitals has been able to reach out to over 20 million lives and provided free eye surgeries to over 2.6 million patients.
