Mission Statement

A link of a short video on SBT - created on our 30 year celebrations in December 2018 https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=BqJi0QcdQ6U&t=8s Our Mission SBT provides a sensitive and caring environment for street and working children, and those in difficult circumstances. It seeks to provide a platform for children to realise their full potential, their right to a safe and secure space, education, and health and nutrition. Our Vision To create a nurturing environment that can foster normal physical and mental growth of street and neglected children. To allow them to return to mainstream society and eventually contribute to its development .

About This Cause

In 1988, Mira Nair's film Salaam Bombay rendered a raw depiction of the vulnerabilities of living on the streets….. It struck a chord in the hearts of compassionate citizens, who identified the mine of potential in India's street children. This small group lost no time to create a space in the form of a Trust where young street boys and girls could feel secure and could breathe hope. Keeping in tandem with the nature of the children, the name 'Salaam Baalak Trust' which literally translates into salute the child seemed befitting. For the past 35 years, Delhi-based Salaam Baalak Trust (SBT) has been dedicated to the care and protection of street children, regardless of caste, color, creed or religion by living or working in and around railway station, at crowded bus stops, slums, congested business and tourist areas. From 3 staff and 25 children on a balcony of Ground Reserve Police at the New Delhi Railway station, SBT has now grown to over 270 staff, providing support services in Delhi & NCR region. SBT currently functions through 11 Contact Points/ Day Care Centers and 7 Shelter Homes, which provide a holistic child development package. Shelter Homes : Salaam Baalak Trust Delhi (SBT) started as a daycare centre for street children. Over a period of time, we realised that a safe space is the most critical need for any child to realise their full potential. Thus, we started residential programmes to provide a safe and child-friendly shelter for children rescued from the streets and any other distress situations. Compliant with the guidelines of the Integrated Child Protection Scheme and Juvenile Justice Act 2015, we have two Children's Homes for Girls, two Children's Homes for Boys and three Open Shelters for boys to provide 24/7 care and protection services. Day care/Contact points : A segment of Delhi's population lives on the streets or in slum areas spread across Delhi. These are vulnerable children open to trafficking and abuse. Our social and outreach workers strive hard to build bonds of trust and friendship with them, their peers and families. We motivate them to attend our programmes at our many Contact Points where they have access to education, medical aid, a healthy meal, life skills, and the opportunity of realising their full potential.
