Mission Statement
Age Action is Ireland's leading advocacy organisation for older people, working for equality and human rights for all of us as we age. We envision a society in which older people are enabled to participate and to live full, independent lives.
About This Cause
Age Action's award winning "Getting Started" programme is a learning and awareness raising programme for older people to encourage and help them to use computers and the internet. Our goal is to promote digital inclusion and positive ageing by providing opportunities for all older people to learn about technology. All our tutors are trained volunteers and work one-to-one with older learners as each learner may require different levels of support, encouragement and have proven very successful. The remote version of this programme, Getting Started KIT, has supported older people in staying connected throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. Since the programme launch in 2011, Getting Started has supported over 43,000 older people in Ireland. Our "Care and Repair" service provides home DIY jobs to older people to help them maintain their homes and independence. Some people lose mobility as they age, and for those who don’t have family calling to them, it can be difficult to keep their homes safe and comfortable. Age Action’s Care and Repair service provides both DIY repairs and trusted trades referrals to our community members, and we prioritise older people who have recently been discharged or are currently being discharged from hospital to ensure they can come home to a safe environment. This service supports ~3,000 older people annually, with over 65,000+ supported since the programme launch in 2007. Our Information Service phone hotline supports older people and their carers to have access to the information they need to thrive. In 2020 and 2021, many calls about COVID safety/restrictions and other health questions came through, but the Information Service offers info on a wide range of topics, including elder abuse, the Fair Deal Scheme, accommodation, accessing public benefits, and more. We receive about 3,000 enquiries annually, with an average time of 1 hour spent responding to each enquiry. Age Action also advocates for a wide range of issues, all focused on supporting older people to maintain choice and control in their own lives.
