Mission Statement

The Ark is where children come to discover and love art. More than a cultural centre, The Ark makes and shares great art by, for and about children, knowing the impact access to art and culture has on their personal, academic and social development. It is also a place where children express themselves creatively and have their say, as is their right. Since 1995 The Ark in Temple Bar has empowered children as equal citizens through meaningful participation in the arts. Our programme spans all artforms, from theatre and dance to music, visual arts, literature and more. We programme performances, exhibitions, hands-on workshops and in-depth projects for children aged 2-12.

About This Cause

The Ark is a dedicated cultural centre for children aged 2–12. We create opportunities for children, along with their families and friends and with their school, to experience exceptional art and cultural experiences. We commission, produce, and present work, for, by, and about children. We do so in our architecturally award-winning home in the heart of Dublin’s Temple Bar, as well as off-site, online and on tour in Ireland and abroad. A pioneering organisation, The Ark is Europe’s first cultural centre for children and we remain a unique part of Ireland’s arts infrastructure. Core funded by the Arts Council, the Department of Education and Dublin City Council, we have more than 25 years’ experience in delivering projects of significant quality and impact, and of prudent financial management and transparent reporting. We treasure the live experience of theatre, music, dance and visual arts and know that children do too. However, recent years have seen us develop a wide-reaching digital programme of on demand filmed performances, live online workshops and downloadable resources. Through these, The Ark now reaches hundreds of thousands of children across Ireland. Since 2020, over 280,000 children have engaged with The Ark! The Ark’s vision, mission and values are inspired by Article 31 of the UN Convention on the Rights of The Child [1989] which was ratified by Ireland in 1992. This states that children have a right to art and culture and to participate fully in cultural life. OUR VISION We believe in every child’s right to discover and love art in a society where creativity and culture are valued and enrich all our lives. OUR MISSION To spark childhood imagination by making and sharing great art for, by and about children, bringing joy and creating a cultural engagement that lasts a lifetime. OUR VALUES Having fun Being friendly and welcoming Doing our best Being brave Always learning
