About This Cause
Many of those supported by Sophia have come from a background of grinding poverty and chaotic home lives. Often they have been taken into the care of the State as children. Many have been victims of violence and domestic abuse. Some are caught in a trap of substance addiction, unable to find a way to stop. More lack a basic education to provide for themselves. Others have mental and physical disabilities, or feel abandoned by the system. However, the vast majority of our service users, once in receipt of the support they need to overcome the issues that contributed to their homelessness, can flourish, gain confidence and eventually move on to independent living. Sophia provides housing and shelter for people who find themselves homeless. But it is more than just a house. Sophia offers a safe place, a home and fresh start in life for those fighting against the gravitational pull back into chaos. a 24/7 basis along with high quality accommodation to some of the most vulnerable and marginalised people. Sophia’s model of care is compatible with the Housing First approach which has been demonstrably successful internationally in achieving sustainable solutions to the needs of the type of people Sophia caters for. We provide quality accommodation while also working with residents on individualised care plans to help them overcome the significant challenges in their lives, and empower them to move on with their lives. Sophia provides intensive support and 262 units of accommodation to 314 people, including 112 children, and supports 35 people in their own homes at its projects in Dublin City, Dun Laoghaire Rathdown, South Dublin, Fingal, Wicklow, Limerick, Cork City and Sligo.
