Mission Statement

The SCCUL Sanctuary is an initiative of SCCUL Enterprises CLG. It is a community hub which provides crucial emotional support in a safe space for those in our communities who are facing significant life challenges.

About This Cause

The SCCUL Sanctuary opened at its present location in 2017. It is located within the grounds of Kilcornan Estate which is owned by the Brother of Charities Services Ireland [BOCSI]. The Sanctuary has a long-term lease on its building until 2036. The SCCUL Sanctuary addresses a number of key social challenges in Galway and across the greater region of the west, mid-west and midlands. The Sanctuary assists in alleviating social isolation by providing support to people experiencing loneliness, isolation and serious health conditions. It also aims to improve cohesion and capacity among communities through our innovative peer assisted coping model. This is achieved in a number of ways: • Provision of services and programmes such as yoga, pottery, art, gardening etc. which also creates employment for the facilitators who provide these services. • Access to workshops such as creative writing and singing. • Establishing local community choral groups for our annual Choir Factor event – a singing for wellbeing initiative. Some of our client groups include: • MS Galway • Family Resource Centres • Cope Galway • Direct Provision Galway • Galway Parkinsons • Community groups • Full-time home-makers • Cancer support groups • Family Carers Ireland • Mental health support groups • HSE – bereavement support groups • Jigsaw • Alzheimer support groups • Early dementia support groups • Foróige • Galway Autism Partnership • Féileacáin [Still births] • Esker House Domestic Violence Refuge • Active Retirement Ireland Each workshop on a Sanctuary Support Day is carefully structured to meet each group’s specific needs e.g. organic healing nutrition for those living with cancer; drama workshops and music sessions for young people living with autism. In addition to the workshops, time is allowed on each day for walks in the sensory garden, spiritual garden and the surrounding woodlands. The day also includes a wholesome breakfast and lunch. The Sanctuary offers each person a reawakening of their sense of belonging in their community by making new connections with others experiencing similar adversities. The Sanctuary aims to ensure that transport is no barrier to people and communities accessing our services. We achieve this by making our Sanctuary minibus [gifted to us in 2017 by Mace Ireland] available to groups who do not have the financial means to make the journey or live in an isolated area with little or no transport options. The Sanctuary minibus has become a lifeline to many on the margins of our communities. However, the minibus is an underused resource as we do not presently have sufficient staff to operate this critical service to oftentimes those most in need of a Sanctuary Support Day. There were 51 Sanctuary Support Days in 2018 with 550 people attending from 24 different groups. “Visiting the Sanctuary for a Sanctuary Support Day was a fantastic experience for me and my children. A chance to get a break away from my busy and sometimes stressful life. A space to think and heal. Feeling loved. Thank you!’ – Client, Esker House Domestic Violence Refuge. Sanctuary Support Days are subsidised by private lettings of the Sanctuary to corporate and community groups. The primary service available at the Sanctuary are the Support Days. It costs between €700-800 to run a Sanctuary Support Day. Our clients pay €20 towards the day [If they have the means, this fee is waived if they do not have the means]. The Sanctuary also embraces a social inclusion model which offers the long-term unemployed a stepping-stone back into a working environment.
