About This Cause

Anam Cara is an all-island organisation founded by bereaved parents to support others who have experienced the death of a child or sibling, at any age and under any circumstances. We offer a safe, compassionate space where parents and siblings can connect with others who truly understand the devastating experience of losing a child. Operating without government funding, Anam Cara supports over 2,500 parents and their children annually through a range of services including support groups, family events, specialized sibling and family-centred supports, resource materials, and helplines. Our work centres on inclusion, connection, and healing—and no one is ever charged for accessing our services. Anam Cara offers the following services: PARENT PEER SUPPORT GROUPS Held monthly in 14 locations nationwide, with additional groups held online, these groups provide safe, compassionate, and inclusive spaces for bereaved parents across Ireland to come together, so that no bereaved parent faces grief alone. Our community has described peer support groups as a lifeline as they navigate the indescribable grief of losing their child. INFORMATION FROM PROFESSIONALS Our professional bereavement information talks give important information about the challenges and milestones after the death of a child, to support any professionals working on the front lines in how to support bereaved parents and siblings. REMEMBERING YOUR CHILD Anam Cara’s Family Remembrance Days create a safe, welcoming space where grief is acknowledged, memories are honoured, and families – especially children – can experience joy, connection, and support. By supporting these events, you are helping families: • Find strength through community • Celebrate and remember their children in a meaningful way • Support grieving siblings in a joyful, child-centred environment • Reduce the long-term impact of isolation and trauma Access to this kind of communal, non-clinical support, especially one that includes the whole family, fosters resilience, validates loss, and offers hope. ONLINE SUPPORT Includes our website, private online forums, podcasts, video series, and links to other support agencies and professional organisations. VIDEOS AND BOOKLETS We have videos and information booklets developed by bereaved parents for bereaved parents, on themes such as “A Mother’s Grief”, “A Dad’s Grief”, “Coping with Sudden Death” and “The Grieving Family”. See anamcara.ie or contact us to order copies of our Bereavement Information Pack. The death of a child is considered the ultimate loss leaving their family devastated and often not knowing who to turn to for support. The grief in intense and impacts far longer than society recognises. Families are isolated by this loss and it can be a very lonely and frightening time. BEREAVEMENT INFORMATION EVENINGS Bereavement Information Evenings provide recently bereaved parents an opportunity to hear an experienced bereavement professional discuss parental grief and what challenges and milestone parents may face after the death of a child. They can act as gentle introduction to the Anam Cara groups. Anam Cara also collaborates with the Milford Care Centre in Limerick. Northern Ireland Children's Hospice and Solas Centre in Waterford to support bereaved parents by co-facilitating bereavement information evenings. These organisations run follow up support groups for parents. By working together we can avoid duplication of services and the best use of our funding.
