Mission Statement

To deliver relevant, tangible care and support for people with dementia and their families; To promote and seek to create a keen awareness of the nature and impact of dementia on families; To work closely with the statutory health agencies; To build on our pioneering endeavours in the planning and development of suitable facilities and models of care; To share the burden of care with those who most need our help.

About This Cause

Western Alzheimers was set up in 1996 as a direct response to the lack of support and services available to people living with dementia in the west of Ireland. From its humble beginnings in a 4 bedroom house in Claremorris it now provides a purpose- built “home from home” overnight respite unit in Ballindine as well as delivering other services to some 5000 families across Galway, Mayo and Roscommon. Our vision, our mission and our work are all underpinned by our commitment to provide these essential support and services that meet the specific needs of people living with dementia across the region each year. We offer families the choice of care supports and facilities which include, respite care, day care, in-home care in the person’s home as well as residential care. We also have a dementia advisor, dementia nurse specialists, a volunteer befriending service as well as family carer training and carer support meetings. Marian House is currently increasing it’s capacity to to provide a 20 bed centre of excellence. Our range of care and support services are funded through state support (HSE & DSP), fundraising activities, and philanthropic contributions. Our aim is to help people living with dementia to continue to enjoy meaningful lives in their own homes and communities.
