Mission Statement
ABOUT ST BRENDAN’S HIGH SUPPORT UNIT, OUR VISION & MISSION The St. Brendan’s Village Community Project is a “not for profit”, registered charity and non- commercial community organisation established in 1984 run by Mulranny Day Centre Housing CLG to provide a continuum of care extending from home support with meals-on-wheels and daycare to supported housing to help people stay locally if that is their wish. The charity’s vision was to ensure that no one from the Clew Bay and Erris area need to leave the locality to be looked after, if that was their wish. In 1998 the dream became a reality when the St. Brendan’s High Support Unit was opened. This facility enabled our community residents who could no longer live in their own homes or in our low support houses the opportunity to stay locally, no matter what their age, disability or healthcare need was, if that was their wish. In St Brendan’s we provide a continuum of support, with a greater degree of care available for those who need it, so preserving personal independence, dignity and personal autonomy as much as possible. We strive for the best possible individual care and support for all of the residents of our Unit, whilst giving our residents the maximum independence possible at every stage of their well- being. We believe in freedom of choice for our residents with the maximum possible personal control of one’s own life at all times. We aim to continue to serve our residents by ensuring they are an integral part of our local community. We will provide our residents with all the material goods necessary to sustain and nurture them physically and mentally, and we will strive for best quality of life by involving them in the day- to- day happenings in our community. OUR AIMS: At St Brendan’s High Support Unit, we recognise that the need to move to residential care can bring feelings of loss, sadness and fear. Therefore, our overall aim is to provide a place that our residents will be able to call home. We strive continuously to promote an environment where residents feel safe, comfortable, valued for who they are, and most importantly, that residents feel happy and fulfilled. As moving to residential care means that residents have additional care needs that cannot be met in their own home, we aim to provide care that meets the needs of each resident and is informed by the best available evidence. OUR OBJECTIVES: The delivery of care and services to our residents is guided by the following objectives: To provide a person- centred approach to care that recognises the unique value of each resident. To provide care and services in a manner that is informed by best practice, and complies with all relevant legislation and standards. To safeguard and protect each resident’s health and well being. To promote quality of life and quality of care for each resident. To promote a culture of continuous learning so that we can continuously improve the care and services we deliver to each resident. To help enable our individual residents to live their lives to their maximum potential by promoting best practice and enabling and empowering them as much as possible in their present environment. To listen to our residents so that they can keep us informed of where we need to improve. Residents will be encouraged to retain links outside of the St. Brendan’s Unit. They will also be encouraged to use these links as a form of alternative support and source of advice. OUR ETHOS: At St Brendan’s, our philosophy of care is based on the recognition that each resident is a unique person with their own individual beliefs, life experiences and values. We believe that every resident must be respected and cared for in a manner that recognises their uniqueness and in accordance with their needs and wishes. We also believe in the promotion of optimum health, happiness and independence for each resident. We promote an approach where our residents are encouraged to be partners in their care as far as each resident is able to participate. We believe that each resident has a right to live in a safe and caring environment that supports them to maximise their potential and to have appropriate advocacy mechanisms to safeguard their rights and especially where their own ability to do so is compromised. We at St Brendan’s believe residents have the right to come and go, based on appropriate risk assessment, and visitors are welcome at all times. We consider social relationships to be of utmost importance and we arrange a wide range of social and recreational activities both on the premises and outside.
