Mission Statement
RADE's vision is that creativity is open to all. Creativity opens the mind and soul and shows us a different side to ourselves. It can bring us together and connect us to the world. It can give us back our voice and help us contribute to society and the world at large. Our mission is to engage people who use drugs and those in recovery, with the arts and therapeutic supports and to provide a platform for their artistic expression. Our purpose is to provide an addiction service in Dublin 8 that represents our belief in the transformative power of the arts to positively affect people’s lives. To do so in a way that maintains high standards of service as determined by our main stakeholders. Our strategy • Grow RADE’s reputation as an innovate alternative to drug use and as a stimulating, well run, effective and welcoming service • Build a sense of community and engage with participants, stakeholders, intra-agency partnerships and the wider community • Continue to build a programme of stimulating, professional led arts workshops • Build equality, diversity and inclusion at RADE • Provide a safe and healthy workplace environment for all staff, volunteers and participants
About This Cause
RADE is a day programme which participants attend 5 days per week. We are core-funded through the South Inner City Drug and Alcohol Task Force who conduit funds from the national Health Service Executive (HSE). We are also core funded by the Irish Department of Social Protection and we operate as a Community Employment Programme on their behalf. We are based in Dublin 8 in a former school building and participants attend daily. RADE engages participants in a series of creative and rehabilitative projects. Through participation in the programme, participants can be motivated to make positive lifestyle changes in terms of their recovery, accommodation, training/education and employment progression. Our work shows that engagement in creative based workshops supports development and improvement of self-esteem, in addition to increased levels of self-awareness and awareness of others that comes from working collaboratively with fellow participants, arts facilitators and professionals, volunteers and staff. Other noticeable positive changes include improved communication and mediation skills, self-confidence, literacy, and social and family relationships. Engagement with holistic elements of the programme such as meditation and yoga is a bedrock of every day and is very popular amongst participants and has improved their health and well-being in terms of reducing levels of stress and anxiety, developing good coping mechanisms and improving ability to focus on good posture and breathing. Progression is also apparent in the Training and Education opportunities that RADE can resource and signpost for participants to engage in. A significant number of our participants require a high level of on-going key-working support and many of these present with a range of complex issues, often with dual diagnosis exacerbated by homelessness and the chronic housing problems in the Dublin area. We provide a range of arts-based activities including film, theatre, creative writing, visual art and gardening, often working over 6 or 8 weeks with professional artists, growing skills and building confidence. We often perform showcases of our work including art exhibitions. Working with professional artists is key to reinforcing a culture of acceptance and inclusion in society, something that many of our participants have been excluded from due to homelessness, poverty or addiction. Many have also been excluded from education. The organization is small with 5 full-time employees and up to 4 part-time community support workers who also benefit from training and general support in returning to the workplace, some after extended periods of unemployment. Our capacity if for up to 18 participants. We are based in a city-centre Dublin City Council owned building. Core funding covers expenditure in areas of core costs such as wages, materials and running costs. Annual grants are applied for to help cover costs of the creative programme including professional artist fees. We also regularly apply for grants to assist with adhoc building maintenance and upkeep. Donations also go a long way to assisting in these costs. Even funding milk on a daily basis for participants and staff over a year can put a strain on finances so every small donation helps.
