Mission Statement
Our aim is to create an inclusive health facility equipped with specialist neurological equipment allowing anyone with a disability to train and improve their current level of physical and mental health by targeting mobility, strength and physical fitness regardless of their current baseline.
About This Cause
The No Barriers Foundation addresses the lack of accessible and affordable ongoing rehabilitation and health support for those with physical and intellectual disabilities once discharged from care within the HSE. We provide ongoing specialist support services in an affordable manner in a socially inclusive gym environment. At present in Donegal, those with varying levels of disability cannot achieve their full rehabilitation potential. This is resulting in increased social marginalisation as well as physical and mental comorbidities increasing readmission rates. There are three reasons for this: - The majority of people with disabilities leaving a hospital setting are not being referred for rehabilitation. - Those who are referred for rehabilitation are not receiving adequate support. It is infrequent (usually every 6 months) and does not meet the health outcomes of the individual. - The cost of private rehabilitation services prohibit most individuals and families from accessing it. We provide specialist neurological services (including one of only 5 Ekso Bionic Robotic Exoskeletons in Ireland) in an inclusive gym environment to the community for as low a cost possible. We bridge the gap between HSE services and expensive private rehabilitation facilities allowing those that are discharged from acute care within the HSE following the likes of a spinal injury, stroke, brain injury, MS or any other neurolgical condition to access these much needed services in an affordable manner. We provide a social outlet and hope to those who often feel isolated and socially marginalised. Their rehabilitation is about building confidence and self esteem as much as regaining physical strength and mobility. We have two full time staff, two part time staff and a team of vounteers who run day to day operations, assisted and governed by a voluntary Board of Directors and two voluntary sub committees. We charge for the services we provide but can operate at a fraction of the cost of a for profit private rehabilitation centre as we can subsidise our running costs with other revenue streams, community fundraising and grants.
