Mission Statement
The Mission of Open Spectrum is to facilitate involvement in leisure and sporting activities for children and young people with an Autism Spectrum Disorder in South Dublin. Children and young people with similar or other disabilities or siblings with no disability may join certain activities if it is the opinion of the Open Spectrum board that this would benefit both the activity and the young people.
About This Cause
Open Spectrum CLG organises and facilitates activities for children and young people with autism in the South Dublin area. All activities are parent-led and are taught by qualified coaches. Among our activities are kayaking, rock climbing, athletics, karate, golf, hill walking, orienteering, dance, surfing and a youth club. These activities are sometimes the only after-school activities available to our young people and offer them essential outlets both social and physical. Equally, involved parents get a chance to meet others and exchange valuable information, frequently their only opportunity to do so. The activities require extra funding because the ratios required by our young people are different to those of mainstream activities and the difference must be funded to make it affordable for already stretched parents. We have 400 families on our books and our parent-led club is offering many of them the only extra-curricular activity they will have in the week, activities which are essential to their physical and mental well-being and teach confidence, turn-taking and sociabilty to a group of young people who find these things hard. Fundamentally, Open Spectrum is simply offering these young people the kinds of opportunities which their neuro-typical peers take for granted but this requires a huge voluntary effort and of course, fund-raising.
