Mission Statement

Sweny's is run entirely by unpaid volunteers who donate their time and knowledge to keep this gem of a place alive. Every year, we greet thousands of visitors from around the world. We are dedicated to growing and nurturing an international literary community by keeping the spirit of Irish literature alive.

About This Cause

Sweny’s Pharmacy is featured in James Joyce’s Ulysses, and is described in sumptuous detail within the novel, a description which stands to this day. The Victorian building has been preserved since its opening in 1847 and is today considered something of a pilgrimage site for those who love Irish literature. Today, Sweny’s is maintained by volunteers, dedicated to preserving the shop as it was in Joyce’s time. Here you will find a selection of second-hand books and the perfect location for daily readings of Joyce’s works. Not forgetting, of course, the lemon-scented soap that made the shop famous! With the recent doubling of our rent, Sweny's faces a bit of a situation today. Consider becoming a patron of Sweny's in a show of support for Dublin culture. Your contribution will directly help us keep the place up and running as we continue to brighten up the community and provide a cultural haven where anybody and everybody can pop in for a cup of tea and a rich cultural experience. To see the impact of the doubling of our expenses, you can check out our finances here: https://search.benefacts.ie/org/4700047/f-w-sweny-company-limited-by-guarantee All donations will go to the covering of our rental expenses.
