Mission Statement
'Healthy Seas, Healthy Seals' Seal Rescue Ireland (Registered Charity No. 20108519) runs the only seal rehabilitation facility in the Republic of Ireland. Relying on a network of volunteers across the country, they rescue, rehabilitate and release seal pups that are found in distress across the coastline. They also work hard to promote ocean conservation and sustainability through education, community outreach and research programmes.
About This Cause
Seal Rescue Ireland is a small charity that works around the clock with a team of hard-working volunteers to rescue and care for native Grey and Common seals from around the coast of Ireland. We aim to rehabilitate the pups back to full health and then return them to the wild when they are fit and ready. Seal Rescue Ireland is also very active in educating the public on threats facing marine life and promoting ocean conservation and sustainability in order to protect our seas and all who inhabit it. We strive to forge a connection between the public and these ecologically significant species, to raise awareness about relevant issues including plastic pollution, climate change, unsustainable fishing, and human disturbance, which put all marine life at risk. As many of the threats that relate to these resilient yet fragile animals originate from human activity, we have taken on the responsibility of mitigating these threats by giving a second chance at life to the seals that come within our care, and protect the environment to which we strive to return them. Seals in our care go through a stage by stage process to get them healthy. Depending on their condition, seals are started with hydration and medication with 24 hour care and are gradually introduced to fish as they stabilise and become stronger. Once beyond initial treatment and out of quarantine, pups are progressed into nursery pools where they can interact with each other and gain strength prior to release. Throughout this process, human interaction is kept to a minimal to ensure the seals remain wild. The whole process from rescue to release normally takes an average of 3-4 months. The Seal Rescue Centre offers guided educational tours to see the seals up close and learn about our work first hand. We are able to operate due to the commitment of volunteers, with a variety of different volunteer programmes available, and rely heavily on the generosity of public donations to continue our work. SRI is actively involved in habitat restoration activities including a native tree planting project aimed to fight climate change and promote biodiversity.
