Mission Statement

Dublin City University Educational Trust is a registered charity (CHY 8960) established in 1988 to advance the development of Dublin City University. Our mission is to develop philanthropic relationships to support DCU in its mission to transform lives and societies. We are passionate about the power of higher education to transform lives and societies and believe great things are possible when philanthropy combines with a young, dynamic and ambitious university like DCU. From enabling research to tackle global challenges like the provision of clean water for everyone to scholarships for talented youth, the generosity of our supporters has a huge impact. By supporting DCU’s mission to transform lives and societies, our donors also contribute to achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals which seek to end poverty, protect the planet and improve the lives and prospects of everyone, everywhere by 2030.

About This Cause

Building relationships with supporters who share our passion for the transformative power of higher education and knowledge is at the heart of everything we do in DCU Educational Trust. Together with our philanthropic partners, we work to advance DCU’s mission to transform lives and societies and contribute to achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. In the 2020-21 academic year, our supporters helped DCU researchers to address key societal challenges and helped us to provide equal access to educational opportunities for all by pledging: • €1.4 million to create world-class teaching and learning facilities for our students • €206,000 for outreach and engagement with local schools and communities to foster more inclusive societies • €2.5 million to enable research to address societal challenges ranging from tackling bullying and online safety, to providing clean water for all • €1.7 million to provide transformative scholarships that open a world of opportunity for our students We are currently seeking partners to support the life-changing projects and research outlined below: A Quality and Inclusive Education for All: Since its formal establishment as a university in 1989, DCU has always been a leader in widening the participation of underrepresented groups in higher education in Ireland. We are seeking support for a number of initiatives that ensure our student body is increasingly reflective of our diverse society and that disadvantaged groups can fully participate in education, employment and wider society. Projects in this area include: • DCU’s Access Programme which supports over 1,100 students from socio-economically disadvantaged backgrounds to attend university each year; • DCU Access to the Workplace which provides life-changing summer internships for DCU Access students to enhance their employability and career prospects; • University of Sanctuary scholarships to enable asylum seekers to enrol in higher education; • DCU’s Autism Friendly University, which is creating a university experience where autistic students are understood, accepted and supported to achieve their personal potential. Health and Wellbeing: As Ireland’s leading university for sport and wellbeing, DCU is known for the promotion of sports and physical activity as part of the student experience, the outstanding performances of our elite athletes, and the expertise of our School of Health and Human Performance in the science that underpins sport, human health and wellbeing. Projects in this area include: • DCU Sport and Wellbeing’s annual programme to engage 18,500 DCU students in sport and physical activity as an integral part of the student experience, and the provision of cutting-edge supports to enable DCU athletes to be the best they can be in sport and in life. • DCU Exoskeleton Programme which enables individuals with reduced mobility due to paralysis to walk again wearing a robotic suits (exoskeleton). Smarter Futures: People drive innovation that changes societies. Through our research, teaching and learning activities, DCU is committed to ensuring that our students and society are prepared for a dynamic future where we haven’t yet imagined the technology that will shape our lives, or the jobs that our graduates will do. With the support of our philanthropic partners, bright minds at DCU are delivering research to promote innovation and to equip future generations with the skills, knowledge and innovative mindset required to create economic growth that will ensure decent work for all. Projects in this area include: • DCU Future Tech – a new state of the art STEM facility under construction on DCU’s Glasnevin Campus which will accommodate an additional 3,000 STEM students each year, enhancing DCU’s ability to provide the STEM graduates and research capacity required in Irish and global society. • STEM Teacher Internship Programme, which enhances the confidence of pre-service primary and post-primary teachers to ignite a passion for STEM in their future students through the provision of 12-week summer internships in STEM roles that provide hands-on experience of STEM careers and industry. Climate Action and Safe, Sustainable Societies: At DCU, sustainability is at the core of all our activities and philanthropy plays an important role in enabling us to provide evidence and insights to safeguard water and to shape policy and practice for more sustainable life and safer societies. Projects in this area include: • DCU Centre for Climate and Society – Ireland’s first climate change research centre with a core focus on humanities and social science perspectives – it seeks to drive social responses to the challenges of climate change. • All Ireland Citizen Science Water Project – led by DCU Water Institute, the project engages citizen scientists in testing water quality in communities across Ireland.
