Mission Statement

Airfield Estate is an educational charity aiming to inspire and enable people to make informed food choices. Our ambition is to be Dublin's sustainable food hub in a world leading sustainable food city.

About This Cause

Airfield Estate is a charitable organisation established by Letitia and Naomi Overend in 1974. Both were trailblazing women who understood the importance of being self-sufficient and sustainable. The sisters were very clear that they wanted Airfield to be used for educational and recreational purposes. This purpose is overseen today by a Board of Directors, the Airfield Youth Board, our Trustees and delivered by our staff on a daily basis. We are a 38-acre working, urban farm and gardens in Dundrum, Dublin with an entire farm to fork sustainable food system that brings the produce of the farm and gardens to the consumer through our restaurant and farmers’ market. Independently funded, we are open daily to the public, we welcome over 300,000 people annually to the estate and restaurant to learn about and explore how their food is produced and how their choices can impact the entire food system. We welcome over 12,000 students to the estate each year for our programmes on food production and biodiversity and we have also created several free resources and programmes for schools such as a Junior Cycle Short Course on food and Farmer Time which links Farmers directly to the classroom for virtual calls every 2 weeks throughout the school year. Research forms a key part of Airfield as we endeavour to create knowledge around the consumer and their understanding, experience and behaviours around food and its sustainable production. We have made changes to how we farm, focusing on regenerative and organic approaches. We are constantly challenging ourselves to make changes on the estate that will be of benefit to the planet, whether it’s through seed saving, showcasing the importance of biodiversity or through new visitor attractions like World of Soil which opened in Spring 2023. Airfield Estate is open Tuesday - Sunday for visitors to enjoy all which the estate has to offer including a rich heritage experience, ornamental and food gardens, working farm, play areas for children, restaurant and cafe, and we host a number of events for the public to enjoy throughout the year. We offer annual memberships so that visitors can enjoy Airfield Estate as often as they like. Membership also includes discounts off food purchased in our restaurant and private events such as cooking classes.
