St. Finbarr's is committed to providing the children in our care with the tools they need to participate fully within society.
About This Cause
As a school in a disadvantaged area our main aim is to provide a safe and nurturing environment for the children in our care. The school and the community have many challenges including social and economic deprivation, drug addiction, early school leavers and homelessness. St. Finbarr's is a designated 'DEIS BAND 1' school meaning it is the most disadvantaged school type in Ireland. The word 'DEIS' means opportunity in Gaelic and the idea is every child in Ireland should have the same opportunities in Ireland when it comes to their education regardless of their address. Unfortunately, the notion that every child will be given the same opportunities is simply not true and the level of inequality that exits in our school system is very evident. Our school has numerous challenges including: 1. A wholly inadequate yard for our preschool autism class. Currently we have a makeshift yard for six non verbal children that is not suitable. 2. A yard that does not meet the needs of the children in the mainstream classes. 3. A building that needs a massive overhaul in terms of colour and vibrancy that reflects the culture we are trying to achieve in the school. 4. Proper heating system. The system we have at the moment is outdated and in constant need of repair. 5. Money for travelling to football matches for children. The price of coaches has soared over the last few years. We simply cannot afford to bring kids on coaches hence they miss out on matches and outings with their class. These are just a fraction of the challenges we face in our school and I would love to chat to you or your organisation about any support you could provide.
