Mission Statement
Bar Kaima is a community based, non-profit, organic agricultural farm which provides a salaried, occupational and alternative educational framework for youths aged 14 to 18 who are at risk of dropping out of school, or who are not part of the formal educational system. The farm was established as a non-profit association a little over 9 years ago. In the past few years Bar Kaima has witnessed a growing trend in the referrals to the farm concerning young people who have severed ties with their social and family relationships, are experiencing emotional crises and may be questioning their sexual identity and gender. In addition, the period of Covid-19 has increased their feeling of isolation and separation. Bar Kaima responds to their need for compassionate and candid one to one conversations, interaction with their peers and mediation with surrounding authorities, specifically their parents and their schools. Bar Kaima offers young people the opportunity to learn through social experience as they work alongside adult role models who encourage them to take on responsibilities, to initiate, and to develop the creativity that is required in agricultural work, including coping with the goals provided by nature itself. Participants in the program take part in all the tasks on the farm, from preparing the earth for planting to the marketing of weekly boxes of agricultural produce. They receive a monthly salary for their efforts. The goal of the Bar Kaima model is to assist youth at risk in developing the skills required to function in present and future frameworks. These frameworks include the formal educational system, further employment opportunities and the Israeli Defense Forces or civil service. The primary projects at the farm are: *A space for the integration of youth who have dropped out of formal education frameworks or are on the verge of dropping out *Employment integration of graduates dealing with post-trauma *A center for assistance and guidance in the fields of mental health among teenagers and providing answers to their families. *Accompanying youth and family members in questions of identity, gender and sexuality *Unique projects for children and adults with special needs and their families We have created collaborations with the Emek Hefer Regional Council, the Departments of Welfare, Education, young adults center, and the Center for the Family, and with other associations that deal in areas related to our work and together We promote long-term process plans that integrate professionals, parents and key people from the community.
About This Cause
A bridge to employment and return to the community for post-trauma sufferers Over the years, we have integrated in the farm young adults coping with post-traumatic stress disorder who were referred by social workers or psychologists, as a continuation of the initial treatment and rehabilitation. Following October 7th, A bridge to employment and return to the community program for post-trauma sufferers is well needed: Post trauma data in Israel following the events of October 7th: Army: Until October 7: 8,650 soldiers identified as suffering from PTSD 2023 only: 2,000 more By the end of 2024: an estimate of 8,000 more Citizens: 20% suffer from post trauma 53.3% of them cannot afford to seek treatment 13% of those who do apply for treatment, did not receive a response People who struggle with PTSD experienced an event that changed their lives, led them to an unexpected course of life and they have a severe feeling of losing their way and being unable to plan for the future, feelings that often cause isolation, social distancing and an inability to connect back to life's tasks. For them, "Bar Kaima" is a place to wake up for in the morning, to be in the company of other people, to connect to a cause greater than themselves. To return to managing a daily routine, being outside, a part of a team. During the working day, their struggle is not the center and they can focus on the work, the crops of the field and the social connection. For the PTSD sufferers, the farm is a bridge to the world of employment. They volunteer at the farm out of a feeling of not being able to take on the commitment of a work relationship and leave us when they feel safe enough to continue to paid work in their area of residence or in their areas of interest. The "Shiah Nefesh" association, which is a therapeutic association, will be integrated into the existing operational staff of “Bar Kaima”. Together we offer: *A space that focuses on treatment and rehabilitation for those dealing with post-traumatic stress disorder *Daily rehabilitation response over a period of several months until the participant returns to normal life. *A variety of body, mind and productive work activities adapted according to the guidelines of the accompanying professional team. *Creating a community in the farm space and a sense of belonging. *Mental care and support for the participants' families in order to provide full support to the family home. *Guidance and help in finding a profession and returning to normal life as much as possible The participants take part in all roles on the farm, learn, experiment and express different skills. From tasks and development in the world of agriculture to cooking, hospitality, event management and customer relations.. The work takes place according to a personal schedule built for each person according to his ability, needs and treatment plan, every day of the week, on a fixed schedule that includes: Arriving at the farm, independently Work in the field or in another space on the farm, according to the needs of the day Shared breakfasts and lunches prepared by the day shift Therapeutic and professional workshops Conversations and personal treatments We will be happy to host you at the farm, introduce you to the place and the atmosphere and expose you to our educational and therapeutic approaches.
