Mission Statement
Trasngenders for Social Justice’s (TSJ) mission is to empower transgender individuals to lead safe, autonomous lives and to promote justice, dignity, and equality for the trans community in Israel. TSJ works to dismantle systemic transphobia while centering the voices and leadership of trans people. Our vision is to create a world where every person within the community can live authentic, fulfilling lives, realizing their full potential. We aim to build a more equitable society where gender freedom is embraced, and where everyone receives the respect and recognition they deserve, regardless of their gender identity. Our work is grounded in four core focus areas: promoting trans health by expanding access to inclusive, affirming healthcare and mental health services; combating organized transphobia by organizing trans activists and exposing the anti-trans movement mechanism; supporting individuals and strengthening community through direct assistance, leadership development, and mutual aid; and making knowledge accessible by training professionals and creating trans-centered information and tools accessible. TSJ leads a range of initiatives designed to ensure that transgender people not only survive but thrive.
About This Cause
TSJ is the longest-standing transgender rights organization in Israel, dedicated to empowering the transgender community. Founded in 2010, TSJ emerged as a grassroots initiative driven by transgender individuals seeking to address their community's pressing needs and challenges. In its early years, TSJ provided trans-specific services such as legal aid, material assistance, access to healthcare and welfare services, and community-building initiatives. Our mission is to empower transgender individuals to shape their lives and contribute to a more inclusive and equitable society. Our holistic approach integrates policy and public advocacy, knowledge-building, and capacity-building to foster lasting, meaningful change. TSJ works to combat systemic discrimination and marginalization, ensuring that transgender individuals can actively participate in shaping the laws, policies, services, and public discourse that impact their lives. We operate through a feminist, intersectional lens, recognizing that transgender rights are fundamental to the broader movements for gender equality, social justice, and a free and equitable society for all. Initially driven by volunteerism and grassroots support, TSJ has evolved into a well-established organization offering a comprehensive range of services and advocacy efforts. Over the years, TSJ has expanded its scope, transitioning from a primarily case-by-case approach to a strategic, systemic one. While remaining deeply attuned to the community's needs, the organization now prioritizes multi-level, broad-scale initiatives to create lasting impact. This evolution reflects TSJ's commitment to growth, development, and expertise in the field of transgender rights. Our main programs and activities to date: - TSJ leads a strategic resistance to expose organized transphobia. We launched public education campaigns and civil society partnerships, to expose anti-trans narratives and connect them to broader threats to democracy and human rights. - Our Activism Incubator provides support for grassroots initiatives nationwide along with community workshops to create resilience in the face of hate. - Our Trans Training Institute delivers over 100 trainings annually, equipping thousands of professionals within the healthcare system with tools for inclusive practice. Alongside, we operate the first-of-its-kind Maayan Website, which includes accessible, research-based content on gender-diverse youth for therapists. - Our Trans Health Initiative develops and advocates national protocols and policies for better gender-affirming care, while the Trans Doula Project provides holistic support to over 300 trans women annually during surgical transitions, combining personal accompaniment, therapeutic support, and advocacy. - TSJ also operates Israel’s first Community Trans Center, offering over 4,000 individuals families, and allies direct support, community programs, and leadership development. We believe that lasting impact is only possible through shared vision and partnership. As we continue to build a safer, more just world for trans people in Israel, we facilitate new partnerships whilst strengthening the capacity of the trans community to meet the challenges of today—and those still to come.
