Mission Statement
Who are we? Hapoel Katamon Jerusalem is a Jerusalem-based soccer club operating as a not-for-profit organization entirely owned by its fans, the club’s trustees. Hapoel Katamon places a strong emphasis on community-building and enhancing the lives of youth in Jerusalem. Its fans and trustees have taken it upon themselves to run projects for over 1200 children and youth from all walks of life in Jerusalem and its vicinity. We also run projects for adults. The projects include a program for youth-at-risk living in special facilities away from home; a coexistence track for Arab and Jewish youth who live close to one another yet have minimal exposure to each other; a unique girls program and a program for youth and adults with disabilities. These projects operate alongside our young Youth Department. Hapoel Katamon Jerusalem uses soccer to inculcate values of tolerance, equality and coexistence. Our main projects in brief The Neighbourhood League, established in 2009, is the club's flagship community initiative to promote coexistence, tolerance and academic excellence through football. in the 2019-20 season forty-eight teams of the age group 10-14 play in the league. 750 girls and boys participate in the project, coming from all neighborhoods of Jerusalem. Arabs and Jewish players play football together building bridges of hope in a challenging reality. Nearly half the players are disadvantaged children from underprivileged neighbourhoods. Learning centers are established in the schools, and players cannot join the football session unless they have completed their homework, aided by our volunteers. One on one - a series of meetings between two teams at a time from Jewish and Arab neighborhoods. In addition to the regular practice sessions, the teams meet for joint practice sessions of mixed teams. Prior to these sessions, the children learn soccer terminology in Hebrew and Arabic, so that games were played using both languages. Youth Division teams are for boys and girls aged 9-18, who have outgrown the Neighborhood League. The teams compete in the Israeli Football Association youth leagues, with practices 4- 5 times a week and weekly games on Saturdays. For the disadvantaged youth they serve, the teams provide a critical, positive framework after school that teaches the values of sportsmanship and sportsmanlike behavior, responsibility for one’s actions and the importance of education. The teams’ staff is in close contact with participants’ schools, and ensures that each player is working to maintain his or her grades while playing on the teams. Katamon`s Academy Established four years ago, in 2016, in collaboration with Dr. Israel Goldstein's Youth Village, the Hapoel Katamon Jerusalem FC Football Academy is a home for young football players aged 13-18. It provides full board, round the clock attention to the pupils who are a part of the academy. In most cases the youths taking part in the program hail from rough socio-economic background, and the academy poses a turning point in their lives, giving them a much needed stability and support.
