Mission Statement

ERAN, Israel's only emotional first aid service, provides a free, confidential 24-hour hotline, seven days a week, 365 days a year. The various sector-specific hotlines offer unconditional emotional support to those who are alone depressed or in crisis. Our Mission: "To provide confidential, unconditional emotional support for all." Loneliness, despair, guilt, anger, embarrassment, fear, love, suicidal thoughts, who among us has not experienced at least one of these emotions in our lives. For many, finding the right person to talk to about our distress is difficult, someone who will not judge or negate us, someone who can hear us without objectivity, someone who will just listen and help us get through the hard times, say a kind word, encourage us to heal and forgive. That is what ERAN does. Twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year.

About This Cause

ERAN was founded in Jerusalem in 1971 by Maria-Berta Zasleni, in memory of her late husband, the psychiatrist, Arie Zasleni. ERAN is Israel's only Emotional First Aid service. It operates 12 Telephone Hotline Centers throughout Israel, as well as four Hotline Centers in the USA, and extended services providing unconditional emotional support via e-mail and real-time chat by an Internet service. By being open to everyone and using their professional skills, ERAN volunteers try to help callers explore their strengths and ways to cope with their emotional ordeals. About 1,400 professionally trained volunteers address issues of violence, suicide, loneliness, mental illness, distress, anxiety, and more. In 2019, ERAN volunteers answered approximately 204,053 calls, of which 1,000 were suicide attempts in progress and 8,500 calls with suicidal content (thoughts, intentions, and threats). Parallel to the central hotline, ERAN operates various lines of assistance to sectorial populations to provide the best solution for the general public: ERAN for Children and youth - ERAN receives every year thousands of calls of children and youth in light of family problems, social rejection, physical, mental, and sexual abuse. Adolescence is a particularly difficult time in a child's emotional development, and many feel unable to talk to their parents/friends or educators and approach ERAN. ERAN for Holocaust Survivors - this service is intended for Holocaust survivors. ERAN's volunteers have been professionally trained to understand the particular difficulties and needs of Israel's aging population, including isolation, morbidity, and even abuse and violence. This hotline, in contrast with all other hotlines, initiates calls to Holocaust Survivors as recommended by the local social and welfare offices and can provide a one on one weekly, over the telephone, counseling service with a dedicated volunteer attached to each case. ERAN for Soldiers and their families. A confidential service designed to provide a solution for the specific issues with which soldiers in the IDF and their families have to contend. This service offers support for soldiers (and their parents) in distress due to the difficulties and stresses of military service time. Its primary purpose is to reduce cases of suicide among soldiers. ERAN Online- an innovative service in Israel- explicitly aimed at children and adolescents who are reticent to call telephone helplines to discuss their problems but are much more comfortable using the medium of the Internet. Online approaches came via personal chat or e-mail. This volume of calls indicates that Israeli youth consider ERAN an appropriate avenue to seek assistance both during challenging emotional crises and in cases of suicidal content. ERAN in Russian - for over one million Russian speaking new immigrants living in Israel, dealing with the difficulties involved in their immigration and assimilation into Israeli society – absorption, social acceptance, unemployment and culture shock, etc. ERAN volunteers help immigrants from the CIS countries to deal with crises in their language, including the difficulties of integration in Israeli society. ERAN in Arabic - serves Israel's Arabic speaking population with trained volunteers, who provide solutions to their specific needs, in their language. During distress and anxiety, the caller prefers to speak in his or her language. Callers speak with Arabic-speaking volunteers, familiar with the social and cultural sensitivities of the Arab sector. Responding to a great need in the Arab speaking population, ERAN opened an Arabic Hotline in 1996. Although asking for help has become less of a taboo among the Arab population, there are very few resources available for those in need. ERAN in an Emergency– in times of increasing security tension, with ERAN's assistance, tens of thousands of people manage to find sustainability during rocket attacks, terrorist episodes, and daily threats of knife attacks. Our unique ability to provide services is immediate and direct. ERAN in the USA – since Operation Protective Edge, there is a significant increase in emotionally stressed calls during the night. Due to an insufficient number of volunteers, ERAN is unable to provide a satisfactory answer to these calls. The solution to the calls received at night lies in recruiting Hebrew speaking Israeli volunteers in the USA. ERAN recruited volunteers recently in Palo Alto, N.J. and Toronto we intend to recruit and train 50-100 new volunteers each year. Different Languages: Hebrew, Arabic, English & Russian An English-speaking service began (including response to Lone Soldiers and students in Emotional Distress). Beyond offering emotional support to victims of violence, cyberbullying, boycotts, ostracism, and shaming, ERAN collaborates with Facebook, Netika Center, and with 105 special hotlines vis-a-vis training, and shared thinking. ----------- Public Awareness: ERAN plays a decisive role in influencing public policy regarding mental health legislation, through its meetings with Knesset members and government Ministers. It serves as an advocate for the public by promoting access to mental health services. All of ERAN's vital services and activities are offered to the public free of charge. Partnerships and Coalitions: ERAN, which serves the entire spectrum of Israeli society, is a founding member of the Israel Trauma Coalition (ITC) and a member of IFOTES, The International Federation of Telephonic Emergency Services, and CHI (Child Helpline International).
