Mission Statement

One in Nine has been providing assistance to women with breast cancer and their families since it was founded in 1994.The organization provides social and emotional support through volunteers who have recovered from breast cancer themselves, as well as through professionals, and it helps those facing breast cancer claim all the rights to which they are entitled. One in Nine also undertakes various initiatives to increase awareness regarding the importance of early detection, and leads the effort to change public policy related to breast cancer in Israel.

About This Cause

Every year about 4,500 new cases of breast cancer are diagnosed in Israel. Breast cancer is the most common form of cancer among Israeli women and about 1,000 Israeli women die from the disease every year. Early detection raises the breast cancer recovery rate to 92%. The organization’s activities include: • “By Your Side" – Personal guidance for women facing breast cancer, from breast cancer survivors who have undergone special professional training. The volunteers help by listening, providing support and sharing their own experiences and helpful information they have gained along the way, in addition to providing assistance related to managing the illness and its ramifications. • Professional support – Emotional support through a variety of different channels including: support groups and private sessions for individuals, couples and families provided by psychologists, social workers and guided imagery therapists. Support is also provided for spouses, children, and parents. • Claiming rights with the pro-bono assistance of a lawyer – Provision of information regarded to rights including topics such as: the healthcare basket, the health funds, the National Insurance Institute, income tax, and employment rights, as well as assistance claiming these rights. • Information center, website, and professional forum – The organization’s website provides details and comprehensive information about the medical aspects of the disease, news updates, information about rights, and more. There is also a multi-disciplinary forum of medical specialists on the website, which is managed by a medical psychologist. • Workshops to promote breast health – Special workshops given in workplaces, social clubs and voluntary organizations with the purpose of changing women’s behavioral patterns as they relate to preventive health and raising breast health awareness. • Public awareness initiatives – Activities to raise awareness regarding early breast cancer detection, issues related to coping with breast cancer, and the organization’s on-going activities. • Advocacy – Managing various efforts to change public policy related to breast health and the care of individuals with breast cancer.
