Emphasis at the Medical Center is placed on close cooperation between basic research, clinical research and clinical trials. Its goal is to train the next generation of physicians to master clinical care, research and teaching. The Friends of the Assaf Harofeh Medical Center supports the above.
About This Cause
Historical Background: Assaf Harofeh Medical Center was founded in August 1948 on the grounds of an old British military hospital, established by the British Mandatory Power after World War I. From its early days, the hospital was housed in old wooden barracks, which were in a terrible state of disrepair. Despite the poor physical conditions, the standard of medical care was always maintained at the highest level by dedicated doctors and nurses. It was not until 1967 that a group of supporting volunteers, who later came to be known as The Friends of Assaf Harofeh Medical Center, decided to carry out a worldwide campaign under the slogan “Evacuate the Barracks”. The success of this campaign, together with the establishment of new Chapters of Friends around the world, was the breakthrough that led to the impressive development of Assaf Harofeh Medical Center. Assaf Harofeh-Today: Assaf Harofeh Medical Center is an 900-bed general academic hospital, close to Rishon Le Zion, Lod and Ramla, 15 km east of Tel-Aviv. It provides medical and surgical care for a population of 450,000 people: Jews, Moslems and Christians. This area has the highest population growth rate in Israel due to the recent influx of immigration from Russia and Ethiopia as well as young married couples. It offers patients on-site comprehensive medical care in many diverse branches of modern medicine Including: ■ Comprehensive emergency services – with a level 1 Trauma Center ■ Comprehensive internal medical services including all sub-specialties ■ Comprehensive gynecological and obstetric services ■ All surgical specialties and sub-specialties ■ General, surgical, coronary, pediatric and neonatal intensive care units ■ Comprehensive pediatric services ■ Comprehensive geriatric services ■ Comprehensive orthopedic services ■ Comprehensive diagnostic imaging services ■ Comprehensive breast cancer management services ■ Comprehensive diagnostic imaging services ■ Nuclear medical services ■ General and peripheral diagnostic and interventional angiography ■ Coronary diagnostic and interventional angiography ■ Multi-specialty laboratories ■ Pathology ■ Genetics ■ Rehabilitation ■ Preventive medicine services Friends of Assaf Harofeh Medical Center: The Friends of Assaf Harofeh Medical Center supports many of the activities listed above. Their support is especially significant to the initiation of new programs and ancillary services, that would not have otherwise been pursued. These projects help ease the medical burden on patients and their families, improving their quality of life. Two such examples exemplifying the diversity of their support are the Assaf HaRofeh School for Handicapped Children, and the hospital's medical clown team. Currently , The Friends of Assaf Harofeh Medical Center have undertaken to support a special project involving the treatment of food allergic patients with oral immunotherapy. It is a unique program within Israel, and is one of the largest programs of its kind in the world. In the last five years the oral immunotherapy program has positively impacted on the lives of hundreds of patients and their families, by allowing them to attain a lifestyle, free from the burdens associated with food allergy. For a detailed description of this program, see the Projects section of the charity profile.
