Mission Statement

Sostegno&Zucchero is a voluntary association made up of family members and friends of mentally ill people, operators, volunteers and citizens that operates in the Reggio Emilia area and province. It is inspired by the principles of solidarity, primacy and dignity of people. In the belief that the psychic diasgio, even if chronic, can evolve in an ameliorative sense, the Association sets itself the fundamental objectives of: > support people suffering from mental disorders and their family and social network, for a better quality of life > help those suffering from mental illness to recover their resources and abilities, to be able to integrate into society and live independently > develop relationships between family members for the exchange of experiences and discussions with scholars and experts in the field > organize periodic meetings between volunteers for an exchange of experiences and for mutual help > sensitize public opinion and institutions on problems related to mental suffering, to combat the stigma that isolates suffering people.

About This Cause

OUR ACTIVITIES * Leisure group It organizes cultural and environmental activities for people with mental illnesses and their families and friends. Events organized include: visits to museums, exhibitions and cities, such as Parma, Ravenna, Lake Ledro in Trento, Parco Sicurtà in Valeggio sul Mincio, Porto Garibaldi, Fonti di Poiano, Febbio, Lake Ventasso and Pietra di Bismantova in the Reggio Emilia Apennines mountains. Three permanent volunteers are involved in these activities. Art and culture experts collaborate and participate and often educate users who, with great results, in turn become reference guides. During walks in the mountains we make use of the generous presence of CAI (Italian Alpine Club) experts. * Creative reading and writing workshop The laboratory is held at the Livi Library of Reggio Emilia and the CSM of Correggio. It is managed by an expert volunteer and is attended by highly motivated users who, through the magic of writing, rediscover their self-esteem and the ability to express their emotions and feelings. * Orchestra dell'Arca music therapy experience An individual path of music therapy attended by people with frailties, managed by Prof. Monica Maccaferri, which led to the creation of the Harmonic Choir "Orchestra dell'Arca". * Creations Workshop In Correggio, a town in Reggio Emilia province, the association has set up a laboratory for the creation of handicraft and gift items. The articles are made by young users recommended by the local Mental Health Center who, assisted by an associate with the help of volunteers, are manufacturing different items of success, often commissioned by both public and private stakeholders. For example: in 2020, during the Covid pandemic, the laboratory produced 700 masks for schools in Correggio; for the national disability day of 3 December 2020, the town of Fabbrico commissioned 200 items displayed in local shops. The laboratory is managed by an associate and five volunteers. * Scandiano's vegetable garden The volunteers of Sostegno&Zucchero have created a vegetable garden from scratch on land owned by the municipality, where the users hoe, sow, take care of the seeds, and get rewarded by seeing their plants grow. The vegetables, as well as for themselves, are also supplied to the Bisamar club where users follow cooking courses. The activity is carried out during the year according to the cultivation cycles. * Cyber Cafe The Sostegno e Zucchero association has created a meeting place for users and family members supported and advocated by the Mental Health Center of the town of Scandiano. The meetings take place twice a week and include a "snack time" dedicated to every attendee. The main purpose is to encourage users to socialize. On dedicated days, small activities are organised: gentle gymnastics, games, cooking, reading and discussions, lessons on caring for the garden we manage, workshops, walks. During 2024, support activities for the vulnerable and their families have intensified, in particular through support groups, listening points, individual relationships, initiatives for involvement in work and recreational activities: creative writing and reading workshops, sewing and artistic creations, music therapy, choreography, garden management, visits to cultural initiatives, short seaside and mountain holidays, social lunches and dinners.
