Mission Statement

Portofranco Umbria is a Study Aid Youth Aggregation Center for middle and high school students, open to all and free of charge. Portofranco aims to be a place to help young people take their lives and thus their school-related needs seriously. Method. Portofranco is a proposal made at the freedom of the pupil, who attends the Center without any obligation or burden. The pupils are first of all led to take responsibility, which begins with an awareness, through orientation interviews, of their own situation, and then continues with the planning, with the help of a teacher, of all those interventions that can help overcome the difficulties encountered. The remedial work of special situations is monitored by the Center's teachers, who maintain contact with families and teachers at the remedial center. Specific objectives: 1. To prevent and counteract forms of hardship, school dropout and demotivation and social exclusion of young people in middle and high school - Promoting the growth of minors, their self-esteem and awareness of themselves and their abilities. - by enhancing the individual and group responsibility of minors, helping them to develop a critical capacity, a consciousness of belonging to positive friendship contexts, to a meaningful relationship with adults, seen as a factor of introduction to reality, - by enhancing the ability to plan their future, starting from a greater knowledge of themselves, their abilities, aptitudes and interests. 2. To implement socialization and inclusion processes through the enhancement of help among peers and peers, developing educational experiences, forms of social participation and integration, in particular: - Educating young people to welcome the need of others, perceived as part of themselves. - Educating in group work and socialization with peers. - Helping to take charge of the educational journey of one's peers and friends - Stimulate the exchange of experiences among peers. 3. Experiment with new forms of collaboration between public subjects and third-party entities engaged in the educational and social field to network different experiences and professionalism.

About This Cause

Portofranco Umbria was founded as an Association of Social Promotion in 2004 by the intuition of a group of teachers passionate about their profession who, faced with the problem of school failure, decided to start from the relationship with children in difficulty by proposing a "personal" help for afternoon study. Around this first core of teachers over the years other teachers, young university students or simple retirees moved by an educational passion have joined. Year after year the number of children helped also grows; in the first ten years of operation more than 1,000 students enrolled in the center. Public institutions also recognize the social utility of the Portofranco Association; in 2006 The project was financed by the Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Perugia and received the patronage of the Municipality of Perugia, the Region, Umbria and the Regional School Office. Since May 2007 it has been registered in the Regional Register of Associations of Social Promotion. As of Feb. 15, 2023, it has registered with RUNTS, transforming itself into a Volunteer Organization What we propose. Portofranco wants to be a place that help kids take the needs related to school seriously, a definitely important circumstance in their lives - It is not just an after-school program: we do not want to control the study, but to motivate and support it through personal involvement with each individual student. - This may not always coincide with immediate school catch-up, but it almost always generates in the pupil a positive attitude towards studying and thus towards reality. - The aim is to help them discover the fascination of knowledge, which, being not just an intellectual fact, requires an appropriate proposal, supported by the company of an adult. - We are convinced that in order to establish that educational relationship, as an introduction to reality that many desire, it is necessary to start from their needs and thus from that daily need that is study help. Proposed activities: - Individual or group remedial activities - Study method help - Insights - Meetings for preparation for the State Examination - Italian courses for foreigners - School and university orientation - Other activities: conferences, study group extra curricular activities, theater projects. How it works. To access Portofranco, one must register. - The first-time student is welcomed by the secretarial staff and invited to a personal interview in order to understand his or her real need and together work out the best way to help. - During enrollment, the operation of the Center is explained, how to gain access and how to book a class with a Center teacher. - After registering, the first study appointment can be scheduled. From this point on, it is the young person who will take responsibility for his relationship with Portofranco; he will be the one to schedule his appointments or cancel them if he is unable to attend. By being confronted with their responsibilities, students acquire more self confidence. Conventions and Collaborations 1. University internships.
