Mission Statement

Plus Roma is an organisation of LGBT+ people living with HIV and their allies whose purpose is to support LGBT+ people living with or at risk of HIV in their social environment, promoting their health and cultivating their human values. Plus Roma activity is based upon science: the information disseminated are those validated according to the scientific method.

About This Cause

Plus Roma was founded based upon the observation that the clinical management of HIV infection, while guaranteeing undeniable successes in terms of virological control and maintenance of a good state of health, cannot address all the other challenges associated with HIV infection: social connections, psychological wellbeing, isolation, disclosure, and many others. Most of the "social" challenges associated with HIV infection (from fear to loneliness, from disclosure to stigma) are too often left to the solitary management of the single person living with HIV. Even today, there are too many gay men living with HIV, not to mention trans people living with HIV, who do not know how to manage the social aspects related to HIV infection: they found themselves alone facing hard questions ("how long I will survive?"), management of the sense of guilt, of the fears of dying, of being alone, and fear to be "outed" as people with HIV. If new are to defeat HIV, we need to tackle it at the social level, as well as developing and using without barriers to access as many drugs and prevention tools as we need. This is the challenge that Plus Roma has decided to take up through its constitution. Plus Roma began its activities in Rome in February 2019 and was officially founded in February 2020 as an affiliate of Plus, the first Italian association of LGBT + people living with HIV, based in Bologna since 2015. Plus Roma focuses on the social aspects related to HIV infection, while at the same time keeping an attentive eye at the scientific aspects and progresses; our mission is to give space, breath and resonance to problems that have a strong weight on people's lives and that often directly affect also on the clinical management of the infection.
