About This Cause

Cometa is committed to foster, educate and develop children and young people in general and to support their families. Cometa is the place where children and young people are encouraged to appreciate the meaning and beauty of life while sharing everyday experiences and where the families are helped and supported in their educational efforts. Cometa’s passion for education and commitment to its cause has been the driving force behind the de-velopment of many initiatives that respond to the needs of an ever-growing number of children and young people. Cometa is an Italian organisation created in 1987 in Como (Italy) by a network of families committed to foster and educate children and young people in distress and to support their families. After a positive experience of fostering by the two founders’ families in Como, and after the involvement of more families interested in fostering, a network of foster-parents families founded Cometa in 2000. Cometa has now developed into a broad organisation offering sustain and an encompassed range of so-cial, health and education services to both children, their natural families and foster families. Since 2003 has developed a wide range of services in collaboration with public social services to offer sup-port, education and training to children and young people aged between 0 and 25, to their families and to their foster families. Courses are provided to potential foster parents to prepare them for the experience and challenges ahead. A day centre for children in foster care has been created where they can do their homework as well as cultural and sport activities after school. The Centre is instrumental in reducing school drop-outs, and im-proving children's educational attainments. Services have been set up for children and young people with learning disabilities, where a multi-disciplinary team including healthcare professionals, communication specialists and speech therapists offer personalised help to each child in order to facilitate his/her educa-tion path. In 2009 the Oliver Twist School, managed by Cometa Formazione, was inaugurated. Since then the school has been providing professional training courses (on carpentry, textile design and hospitality) for young people (14-18 y.o.), including dropouts and kids with disabilities, to prepare them to enter the job market with the system of alternating study with work placements (learning by doing). In September 2016 was also opened the Liceo Scientifico Artigianale, a joint approach matching STEM education and humanitas, where the students will have the possibility to learn academic and professional skills and make a job ex-perience in one of our partner companies. Thanks to that experience, in 2008 a new social enterprise Contrada degli Artigiani (Artisans Village) was born: traditional artisans will offer their know-how and technical skills to young students in the carpentry and textile design fields. In 2015 Cometa started Anagramma, a coffee bar where young people with dis-abilities have the opportunity to work with professional workers of Cometa.
