Mission Statement
ALA Milano is a no profit organization committed to promotion of social inclusion and equal opportunity for all people against any discrimination known to impact people’s ability. We truly believe in the persons potential and we work to allow them being the centre of their own choices and of their own behaviors as well. ALA was settled in 1996 aimed to strive against discrimination of people living with HIV (PLHIV) as well as to encourage their socio-economic reintegration. In 2002 it started to take care of all that fragile and discriminated people in sensitive areas such as drugs addiction, prostitution, immigration, racism and poverty. Furthermore, ALA deals with people who are marginalized to alleviate their condition with actions of empowerment. Moreover, ALA organizes, in collaboration with volunteer health operators, including HIV specialists, a mobile unit for HIV voluntary test and counselling of transgender (TG) sex workers, in order to improve their access to testing and care. Another mobile unit deals with alcohol test, meeting young people in places of fun (discotheque, pub, concerts, meeting points, …). We then began to deal with social discomfort, especially: juvenile distress, bullyng problem, violence against women, alcol related problems. Our inclusion program has been focused on preventive measures aimed at reducing risk factors, protecting the health and the psychophysical integrity of these people. Nowadays, ALA intercepts thousands of young people, adults and hundreds of commercial sex workers (CSW), working on the street or indoor), providing counselling and prevention tools. Furthermore, ALA organizes training courses for health care professionals, public officials, teachers and citizens. The distinctive characteristic of our activities is the direct involvement of the recipients (participated methodology).This model has allowed the activation of structured interventions and elaborate in operation of the real demands of the place or the interested person. Our philosophy is characterized in the innovation, in the experimentation and especially in the evaluation of our actions.
About This Cause
ALA is able to welcome and host volunteers who want to support the organization’s mission and activities. Volunteering can be an opportunity to reflect on realities far from their own and to think to their habits and attitudes, preconceptions; for exemple in relation to minorities or in relation to its own approach to the alcohol (risks are usually underestimated). Volunteers may be employed on the following task: - first reception of persons who turn to the association for one of its services - support the staff of the organization during awareness-raising events aimed at citizenship - support the staff of the organization in the realization of fundraising events - assist mobile unit in its tasks (take alcohl test, administer questionnaires, …)
