Mission Statement
NPO Mirai no Mori creates life-changing outdoor programs for abused, neglected, and orphaned children in Japan, supporting their growth into happy and successful young adults.
About This Cause
THE ISSUE Approximately 10% of the children in welfare institutions are orphans, but most are escaping abuse, neglect, or poverty. Emotional and psychological damage is the norm. Among the issues we directly address: ・Distrust of others and themselves ・Low self esteem ・Stunted communication skills ・Extreme risk aversion, fear of failure Without intervention, the outlook is bleak. Young adults leaving institutional care at age 18 face disproportionate underemployment, homelessness, and involvement in the sex industry and organized crime. Some children of these underprepared adults will end up in institutional care just as their parents did. CAMP CHANGES KIDS "Outdoors" "English" "Mentoring" Mirai no Mori camps are the first step in changing a cycle of dysfunction and despair to a cycle of self-actualization and inspiration. • Nature is a healer. The simple act of getting outdoors can be therapeutic for troubled kids. • Each day is full of healthy outdoor play, whereas many Fukushima kids normally can't play outdoors. Strong bodies support emotional and intellectual growth. • Outdoor adventure encourages taking healthy risks. Failure isn’t punished. Kids are supported until they succeed. • Activities like high ropes courses help kids relearn trust in others. Taking responsibility for the safety of their camp mates, they realize they are worthy of trust as well. • Passionate international role models share practical English and a broad perspective. Caregivers report that children return to school with higher motivation. • Kids come out of their shells, communicate more openly, and have more fun! MAKING A LASTING DIFFERENCE Camps are part of a comprehensive plan to help children reclaim their potential and become happy and successful adults. Back to Nature program: Between camps, we reconnect with children through fun environmental projects. Undervalued children realize they are needed and have an important role to play in society. Leader in Training (LIT): High school students support younger campers while strengthening work skills, English ability, and personal character. Global Leader program (2017 launch): LIT graduates will be placed with trusted employment partners in countries participating in the working holiday visa program. Global Leaders will spend a year overseas learning English and gaining skills on the job, greatly increasing their options. Completing the circle, Global Leaders will return to inspire and mentor younger Mirai no Mori participants. We serve kids caught in a multigenerational cycle of negative outcomes. Through the outdoors, English, and ongoing mentoring, children don’t just realise their own potential - they gain the strength to help others.
