Mission Statement

Run for the Cure® Foundation is a registered NPO with the Tokyo Metropolitan Government since 2004. Our mission is to eradicate breast cancer in Japan as a life-threatening disease through education, timely screening, and treatment.

About This Cause

Run for the Cure® Foundation started first as a volunteer group in 2003 and obtained an NPO status with the Tokyo Metropolitan Government in 2004. The Foundation is an independent NPO and has no affiliations with other domestic or international organizations. Our mission is to eradicate breast cancer in Japan as a life-threatening disease through education, timely screening, and treatment. Through our activities, the Foundation develops and executes education initiatives, funds clinical examinations, and donates mammography machines. We have donated six mammography machines to six clinics in areas where women are underserved, more than 18,000 women have benefited from mammograms, with over 3,600 funded screenings. The Foundation holds three annual events open to the general public to raise funds in support of our cause. PiNK is Japan’s one and only magazine dedicated to breast cancer. About 20,000 copies of this quarterly magazine are distributed free-of-charge nationwide through medical institutions, health centers, community centers, sports shops, libraries, schools and companies. Hana-me(はなみ) is one of the Foundation's education initiatives, and the Foundation organized seminars with over 100 locations all for free of charge to educate both men and women about basic breast cancer information as well as signs of breast cancer and how to perform a monthly self-examination as they often are not taught in school in Japan, and some 2,800 people have benefitted from the program since its start in September 2013. The Foundation also runs a program to help breast cancer patients and survivors increase their QOL (Quality of Life) through the medium of "appearance care" and complementary therapies such as aromatherapy. Those who are undergoing medical treatment or had medical treatment, as well as their family members and/or friends, are invited to a day of beauty treatment free-of-charge, where they can learn important self-care tips and side effects management. This program provides means for them to feel normal again and beautiful again even after the medical treatment, which encourages them to restore their true self and go back to their daily life with confidence. Run for the Cure® Foundation will continue the efforts to further increase awareness about breast cancer and support those who have been affected by the disease.
