About This Cause

The Teenagers Center for Awakening CBO is a dynamic and essential Refugee- Led nonprofit Community- Based Organization, deeply rooted in the heart of Kakuma. Our unwavering mission is to empower the vulnerable and often overlooked teenage population within the refugee community by providing them with the tools, knowledge, and support necessary to build sustainable livelihoods and foster positive community impact. Kakuma, a complex and challenging environment, presents unique hurdles for young people, often limiting their access to education, skill development, and crucial psychosocial support. Recognizing this critical gap, the Teenagers Center for Awakening CBO was established to be a beacon of hope and opportunity. We believe that by investing in the potential of these teenagers, we are not only transforming individual lives but also contributing significantly to the overall resilience and development of the entire community. Our approach is holistic, addressing the multifaceted needs of teenagers through a range of carefully designed key activities. A cornerstone of our work is socio- psychological teachings. These sessions are vital for helping teenagers navigate the trauma, stress, and uncertainties often associated with displacement. We provide safe spaces for open dialogue, emotional healing, and the development of coping mechanisms, promoting mental well-being and resilience. These teachings also encompass life skills, conflict resolution, and positive peer engagement, empowering teenagers to make informed decisions and build healthy relationships. Complementing our psychosocial support is hands- on craft training. This practical component is designed to equip teenagers with tangible, marketable skills that can lead directly to economic independence. Our vocational training programs focus on various crafts, tailored to the local context and market demands. This could include tailoring, carpentry, beadwork, or other artisanal skills, providing participants with the ability to generate income and contribute to their households. These skills are not only about earning a living but also about fostering creativity, self-reliance, and a sense of accomplishment. Recognizing the specific vulnerabilities and barriers faced by young women, teenage girls education is a paramount focus. We actively work to promote and support the education of teenage girls who may have been denied access due to cultural norms, economic hardship, or displacement. This includes providing academic support, mentorship, and creating an environment that encourages their continued learning and personal growth. By empowering girls through education, we are breaking cycles of poverty and fostering future leaders within the community. Hygiene promotion is integrated into all our programs, recognizing its fundamental importance for health and dignity in a camp setting. We conduct regular workshops and awareness campaigns on personal hygiene, sanitation, and disease prevention. This is crucial for maintaining public health, especially given the crowded living conditions and limited resources. In an increasingly digital world, Computer literacy is no longer a luxury but a necessity. Our computer literacy programs equip teenagers with essential digital skills, opening doors to further educational opportunities, information access, and potential remote work opportunities. These skills are vital for their integration into modern society and for enhancing their future prospects. Our focus on livelihoods extends beyond just skill acquisition. We aim to connect trained teenagers with opportunities for income generation, whether through entrepreneurship, small business development, or linking them with existing market demands. This involves mentorship, business planning support, and facilitating access to resources that can help them establish sustainable income streams. Finally, we recognize the interconnectedness of human well- being and the environment. Our environment safeguard training educates teenagers on sustainable practices, waste management, conservation, and the importance of protecting their surroundings. This instills a sense of responsibility towards the environment and encourages practices that contribute to a healthier, more sustainable future for the entire community. The Teenagers Center for Awakening CBO is more than just an organization; it is a community- driven movement. Our refugee leadership ensures that our programs are culturally sensitive, relevant, and directly address the lived experiences of those we serve. We are committed to fostering resilience, promoting self-reliance, and building a brighter future for the teenagers of Kakuma, empowering them to become agents of positive change within their community and beyond.
