About This Cause

Introduction: Mvono Community Centre (MCC) is a community-based organization located in Taita Taveta County on the Kenyan Coast. Established in 2004 by Rev. Violet Chanya, MCC is a registered non-political, non-profit organization dedicated to supporting orphans, vulnerable children (OVCs), widows, and victims of gender-based violence (GBV). With a focus on providing essential support such as shelter, food, psychosocial care, medical assistance, clothing, and education, MCC operates with a commitment to transparency and non-discrimination in all its efforts. Vision Statement: We aim to positively transform the lives of orphans & vulnerable children, widows and Gender Based Violence victims in the Community of Taita Sub County, Taita Taveta County and strengthen the capacity of households fostering the vulnerable in society. History: In 2004, Rev. Violet Chanya, inspired by compassion and guided by James 1:26-27, initiated MCC with a vision focused on supporting orphans and widows. The vision gained momentum when Bishop Panuel Mkungo partnered with five churches to conduct monthly fundraising efforts, which included donations of food and clothing. This collective action laid the foundation for MCC's mission-driven initiatives. In 2011, MCC launched the widow’s program, providing basic needs, psychosocial support, mentorship, and a safe space for sharing experiences. In August 2021, MCC ICT College was established to offer basic computer skills to post-secondary students awaiting admission to tertiary institutions. Also in August 2021, MCC introduced the Kids Club, targeting children from the local community. The program aims to promote peaceful coexistence, good morals, and talent development. Every fortnight, approximately 35 children attend the club, where they showcase their talents. Organizational Structure: MCC operates under a well-structured leadership framework. The Board of Directors, responsible for overseeing the organization's mission and assets, includes the Chairperson, Treasurer, Secretary, and five members. The executive team, led by the Chairperson, includes various committees such as the Widows Cooperative Committee, Tree Nursery Committee, OVC Committee, and ICT Committee. The staff comprises a Center Manager who is also the organisation Accountant, Programs Coordinator, ICT Specialist, Social Worker, and Publicity and Marketing Officer, ensuring effective management and implementation of MCC’s programs. Core Values: MCC adheres to core values of non-discrimination, transparency, integrity, selflessness, unity, synergy, and love. These principles guide MCC’s relationships with its stakeholders and ensure that its mission is carried out with dignity and respect. Programs: MCC’s initial focus was on providing basic needs like education, food, shelter, and clothing for OVCs. Over time, the organization has expanded to offer a diverse range of programs aimed at empowering individuals and strengthening communities: 1. Education: MCC offers financial support, mentorship, and resources to help OVCs complete their education. By covering school fees, providing supplies, and offering personal mentorship, the program ensures that financial barriers do not hinder vulnerable children’s education. 2. Gender-Based Violence (GBV) Advocacy: This program focuses on reducing violence and empowering survivors through education, outreach, and support. In collaboration with local authorities, partners, and community members, MCC works to raise awareness, provide safe spaces, and offer counseling and legal assistance to survivors. 3. Widows Empowerment: The widows program helps women gain financial independence by providing vocational training, supporting the creation of marketable products, and offering a cooperative platform for selling goods. This initiative fosters sustainable livelihoods and builds a strong community network. 4. Youth Empowerment and Technology: Through its ICT center, MCC offers basic computer skills training and plans to introduce advanced tech courses, including coding. The Kids Club fosters creativity, critical thinking, and teamwork in children aged 3 to 13, preparing them for success in the digital economy and online job market. 5. Climate Resilience: This program promotes sustainable environmental practices, including tree planting and conservation efforts. Through community involvement in reforestation and responsible land management, MCC aims to mitigate climate change and build long-term environmental sustainability. 6. Health and Nutrition: MCC strives to improve community health and well-being by providing access to essential healthcare services and promoting good nutrition. Through medical camps, nutritional supplementation for OVCs, and health education, the program addresses both immediate and long-term health challenges. 7. Psychosocial and Spiritual Support: This program offers counseling, support groups, and life skills workshops, led by trained social workers and religious leaders affiliated with the International Fellowship for Christ (IFC) Churches. The initiative helps individuals build emotional resilience and gain spiritual guidance to overcome challenges. Achievements: • Education: Facilitated access to education for over 500 OVCs through sponsorship programs and collaborations with sponsors and government bodies like the Constituency Development Fund (CDF). • Community Engagement: Hosted quarterly luncheons since 2008, providing a supportive environment for counseling and encouragement. • ICT Training: Trained over 310 students in basic ICT skills, enhancing their employability and contributing to economic empowerment. • Infrastructure Development: Acquired one acre of land and constructed key infrastructure, including a 3-room office block and a fully equipped computer lab. • Humanitarian Aid: Provided food to over 1,000 families in need through donations, ensuring access to basic necessities during times of hardship. Challenges: Despite significant achievements, MCC faces several challenges: • Financial Sustainability: Limited funding hinders the ability to support the organization's operations and expand its impact. • Infrastructure: The absence of a dedicated Rescue Centre for GBV victims necessitates reliance on foster homes, underscoring the need for more secure accommodations. • Environmental Sustainability: The organization requires an underground water reservoir to harvest rainwater, prevent soil erosion, and additional infrastructure like a backup generator and perimeter security to enhance operational efficiency and safety. Conclusion: Mvono Community Centre continues to serve as a beacon of hope and transformation in Taita Taveta County. Guided by its mission, MCC remains committed to providing holistic support and empowerment to the most vulnerable members of the community. By staying true to its core values of compassion, integrity, and transparency, MCC strives to address ongoing challenges and build a sustainable future for all those it serves.
