Mission Statement
The mission of the YWCA is to achieve social justice for women and girls through programs for community development. To this end, the YWCA has given priority to the advancement of women and to their greater participation in society.
About This Cause
The Young Women’s Christian Association (YWCA) of Lebanon is the oldest volunteer movement for women and girls in the country and is committed to strengthening its existing programs championing the rights to education and quality childcare. The YWCA has supported women’s livelihoods and their economic and social well-being since the 1920s. Through its 8 local branches, theYWCA promotes women’s development, especially marginalized young women, through economic empowerment, community-based services (hostel, pre-school programs, health care center) and non-violence programs with a shelter that receives women survivors of gender-based violence (GBV) with their children. Each day, by opening its doors, the YWCA offers hope and support for a brighter future for women, children, and their families. Main Programs: 1- Quality Day Care Services: The YWCA operates day care services for children aged 40 days to 6 years at three branches in Chiyah, Hadath, and Marjeyoun. As Lebanon's economic crisis deepens, impoverished families are struggling to provide education for their children, making the YWCA's role even more crucial. 2- Economic Empowerment: The YWCA focuses on providing technical and vocational training to empower youth, especially young women. This is done through three YWCA centers in Beirut, Chiyah, and Tripoli. The courses offered include technical certificate programs and accelerated diploma programs. Beneficiaries receive certificates and job placement assistance to enhance their self-sufficiency and employability. 3- Shelter for Survivors of Violence: As a prominent advocate for non-violence in Lebanon, the YWCA provides a shelter for survivors of violence. to help abused women break the cycle of violence for themselves and their families. Each year, the YWCA offers safe refuge, social, and psychological services to 25 female survivors of violence and their children. 4- The Ablah YWCA Primary Health Care Center serves as a hub for youth and community members, offering healthcare services and awareness programs. It serves an area encompassing 10 villages with 80,000 residents. Specialized physicians provide services in obstetrics, cardio-vascular disorders, internal and family medicine, ophthalmology, and pediatrics. The center also conducts health awareness lectures, emphasizing both preventive and curative healthcare. 5- Safe Home and Spaces: The YWCA of Lebanon offers safe spaces for women and young women. The Beirut YWCA hostel serves as comfortable and affordable accommodation for women, creating a welcoming and secure environment for 90 students and working women. Despite severe damage from the Beirut Port explosion, the YWCA, with support from partners, undertook urgent repairs to continue providing safe spaces.
