About This Cause
Caritas Lebanon (CL) has been a steady force since its establishment in 1972, navigating through the complexities of the civil war. Formally authorized in 1977, CL started by extending a helping hand during the conflict and has since broadened its services to cover medical care, social support, education, protection initiatives to all people in need and aid for refugees and migrants with no discrimination based on race, ethnicity, religion, or nationality. With half a century of experience in the humanitarian sector, CL has weathered crises from wars and political conflicts. In 2023, the organization handled a diverse portfolio of over 50 active projects, flexing a budget surpassing $19 million USD. Collaborating with multilateral organizations like UN agencies (UNHCR, WFP, ILO), international donors such as bilateral agencies, Caritas member organizations, and other NGOs, CL consistently executes projects with yearly budgets exceeding $20 million USD. Presently, Caritas Lebanon is driven by a dedicated team of over 750 local and international staff members and the commitment of 1,625 dynamic youth volunteers. Geographically, Caritas Lebanon strategically dots the landscape with 37 social centers, 4 special educational centers in BML (Beirut, Mount Lebanon) and Bekaa governorates, 12 community centers for refugees nationwide, 3 safe shelters for migrants in BML, 5 social enterprises, along with 11 Primary Healthcare Centers (PHCCs) and 8 Mobile Medical Units (MMUs). This expansive network empowers CL to provide comprehensive support and services precisely where they're needed most. Part of the global tapestry as a member of Caritas Internationalis, a network of Catholic organizations active in over 200 countries and territories, CL follows common management standards (CIMS), ensuring seamless collaboration and coordination. This strategically position CL to provide comprehensive support and services where they are needed most. CL has a proven track record of success in delivering humanitarian assistance in Lebanon since 1972. Building on experience from previous emergencies, CL is well prepared and organized for large-scale emergency responses. With a solid network of 37 social centers and over 30 additional support centers spread across the country, hundreds of dedicated volunteers and social workers, 5 warehouses, a 24/7 emergency room, and trained Emergency Response Team, CL is well equipped to respond effectively to the needs of displaced communities and affected population in close coordination with the national humanitarian coordination structure to avoid duplication and ensure coordinated response. Caritas Lebanon adheres to national policies and international standards, including anti-fraud policies and PSEA frameworks. We are prequalified for procurement by the UN, ensuring transparent and efficient supply chain management. Our commitment to accountability is reinforced through adherence to AAP principles and comprehensive MEAL frameworks, safeguarding the integrity of our operations and prioritizing the rights and dignity of affected communities. Crisis situation Overview: Lebanon is facing a devastating humanitarian situation due to escalating conflict, resulting in more than 2,400 deaths, 11,000 injuries, and nearly 1.2million displaced individuals, as recently reported by the Ministry of Public Health. Internally displaced persons (IDPs) are particularly struggling to access essential services such as food, shelter, and healthcare. Caritas Lebanon (Caritas League of Lebanon) Response: Caritas Lebanon is on the ground, actively responding to emergencies. Since the rapid escalation of hostilities in September 2024, CL has reached over 120,000 internally displaced persons (IDPs) and affected individuals in just the first month of the response, delivering more than one million essential services. These include daily hot meals, ready-to-eat food packages, hygiene kits, baby and elderly care kits, WASH services, and comprehensive healthcare. We also provide psychosocial support to help individuals cope with trauma. These ongoing efforts underscore Caritas Lebanon's unwavering commitment to alleviating suffering and protecting the most vulnerable during this critical time.
