About This Cause

Amigos de Kolijke, AC is a non-profit civil association founded in 2010 that supports Kolijke in financing environmental, social, and educational projects and programs carried out both in the reserve and with the communities surrounding it. We are authorized by the Ministry of Finance and Public Credit as an Authorized Donor, which allows us to issue receipts that are 100% tax deductible. Our goal is to conserve the biodiversity of the Sierra Norte de Puebla, and we do so through research projects, measures to care for and restore local native ecosystems, environmental education projects, and sustainable community development with neighboring indigenous communities. Environmental restoration and research. We have a great biodiversity, which we have studied and recorded for almost 30 years. We have created conditions for the recovery of endangered species and accelerated the process of forest regeneration, as well as conducting environmental studies that have allowed us to establish new management and conservation categories in the region where we are located. Environmental conservation and research. At Kolijke, we have been working for almost three decades with the aim of conserving and restoring the biodiversity of the ecosystems it shelters, as well as getting to know and understand them better. We have carried out restoration projects, specifically for the flora and fauna that inhabit the riverbanks and interior of the river and the high jungle, reforestation programs in the most degraded areas, actions for the recovery and care of species that are threatened or considered extinct in the area, as well as lists of local wild species from four groups of fauna and one of flora. Social, environmental, and educational program. We work with communities near Kolijke on projects related to environmental education, artistic expression and experimentation, community organization, and agro-ecological production. The goal is to spark autonomous processes of sustainable community development that improve the living conditions of residents without jeopardizing the health and balance of local ecosystems. Community Training and Environmental Education. Since 2018, through the federal program Jóvenes Construyendo el Futuro (Youth Building the Future), we have been training young people to build, together with them, alternative employment and productive opportunities that allow them to live in their communities, instead of having to migrate to find economic sustenance. The federal program gives young people a one-year scholarship in exchange for training with Amigos de Kolijke AC.During this year, they are involved in the management and implementation of projects related to environmental monitoring, conservation, and education; agro-ecology and sustainable production; and community organization. By the end of the training year, we hope that these young people will have the tools to launch and support projects in their communities, develop productive activities that improve their living conditions, and become environmental educators in the area. The first generation of young people who participated in the federal program completed their year of training in March 2020, and their work has been crucial in creating backyard gardens, promoting the Community Production Center in Ocomantla, planning the seed bank, the bio-factory project, and the campaign to protect bees and local pollinators. In addition, three of them were trained to become beekeepers.
